The Bold Type Review: Day Trippers (Season 5 Episode 4)

Reviews, The Bold Type

No, you are not accidentally macro-dosing. The Bold Type Season 5 Episode 4, “Day Trippers,” is hopelessly mediocre.

The fact that Jane is now explicitly being groomed to become the next Jacqueline Carlyle means that her journey from Season 1 to Season 5 might just be the most boring in TV history.

At this point, I’d rather watch Jane get killed by a taxi in the middle of Manhattan than become the next editor-in-chief of Scarlet Magazine.

You read it here first. If she does die by Episode 6, I will eat humble pie but until that happens, this particular part of Jane’s story is no longer worth the energy it takes my fingers to type.

Sadly, we have to keep talking about Jane because it’s absolutely appalling that she gets respect from a subordinate for macro-dosing/being high on the job, and Sutton gets called out by Oliver.

Day drinking during work hours for anything other than a toast for which your boss hands you alcohol (that has happened at Scarlet this season) is a no-no. Oliver’s implication that Sutton needs rehab soon is a little bit extra, but she does need help — therapy is a good idea.

It’s just maddening that she gets caught and Jane is running around the office inside a Cindy Lauper musical of her own making and getting praised for giving the most mediocre writing advice there is to give.

Sutton has been drinking a lot all season and denying her pain. So, I hope she’s off on a nice relaxing retreat while Jane is getting hit by a bus in the finale of my dreams.

“Day Trippers” is not the worst hour of television to ever air on Freeform. It has some strangely satisfying moments.

Getting high helps Kat realize she needs to quit The Bell, so it’s very sad she has waited this long to get high.

Plus, Andrew gives Jane good advice about admitting her faults. Frenimies bonding is always fun to watch toward the end of a series, as long as they don’t become real friends by the end — that would be annoying.

The scenes featuring the bold three hallucinating are fun to watch. The Bold Type only benefits from anything slightly experimental at this point — even though Kat and Sutton’s stories are easier to stomach than Jane’s, they’re still bland.

The Bold Type lost its way in Season 4 and there is simply not enough time in the series for it to get on the right track and deliver the glorious ending that the Jane, Kat, and Sutton of Season 1 deserve.

We are not watching the original characters’ stories.

It’s as if we are on a rollercoaster that we know is going to break down soon. We’ll get off the ride in time to watch its wheels fall off from afar, but the knowledge that it is about to collapse is still allowed to make us sad.

The Fine Print
  • That clip during each recap of Jaqueline telling Jane she’s the future of “Scarlet” is going to drive me insane.
  • Addison is probably a little bit more annoying than Jane.
  • At least the music supervisor still hasn’t missed a beat….see what I did there?
