The Resident Review: First Days, Last Days (Season 4 Episode 8)

Reviews, The Resident

The Resident Season 4 Episode 8, “First Days, Last Days,” proves how important guest stars are. Even the ones we haven’t met before are easy to like and emotionally invest in.

We’re probably never going to see Josco and Meghan again, but it’s a relief when Conrad correctly diagnoses Meghan and we know that they are going to live in wedded bliss visiting haunted hotels for many years to come.

It’s also such a pleasure to see Rose still needs to visit Chastain. Sadly, she’s not flirting with Devon, but watching her put Dr. Cain in his place is even better.

Of course, watching Dr. Voss fire him is even better. It’s scary to think about what Barret will do with so much time on his hands and his beloved career to fight for, especially because he’s been doing just fine ruining Mina’s career while recovering.

At least we’re finally getting to see Mina’s immigration struggle on-screen. Nothing much is going on yet, but dialogue doesn’t count as a story. The Resident has a chance to tell a unique immigration story with Mina, and officials coming to question her is a promising start.

It’s strange to continue Nic’s storyline with her attacker so soon. The plot has very little impact except that we learn about Billie’s rape because she’s helping Nic find a way to move on.

Billie is staying around, which is amazing because she’s awesome. It’s great to learn details of her history but I can’t help thinking Nic seeing her attacker would hit more powerfully later into the season.

Jay is the worst for stabbing Nic and baby Hawkins-Nevin. And even though it’s quite soon to see him, he’s another patient we have an investment in. So what if we are wishing complications on him?

It’s all entertaining enough. The episode just lacks a definitive thread tying everyone together. It’s Leela’s first day as a resident, possibly Cain’s last as a doctor, and Billie’s about to return to Chastain. But each story stands on its own.

The fact that Devon possibly has a baby with Princess Nadine definitely comes out of nowhere and is not a happy surprise.

The Princess isn’t the worst character on The Resident Season 3. But she has been a forgettable character until now. Devon deserves Rose and technically, she’s not even his patient anymore.

I suppose Princess Nadine’s “surprise” counts as a cliffhanger, but the fact that Mina’s immigration fight has just begun is a better one.

The Raptor is soon going to have to face the fact that he’s done what he could do as a Black man to give another Black man chances to do right and change. Cain might be past redemption.

We know Dr. Austin isn’t going to let his girlfriend and former star pupil get deported to protect a morally corrupt man.

No matter that Cain tries to stop his plan to destroy Mina in its tracks, he’s not successful.

This means that at CEO Voss’ Chastian, the biggest showdown so far is going to be between The Raptor and Dr. Cain.

It’s a showdown that has the potential to be the best one in The Resident history. But sadly now all we can do is wait.

Doctor’s Notes:
  • It’s so important that we are going to get to watch Leela, a dyslexic medical student, thrive and struggle her way through a residency at Chastain.
  • Many people on staff would be great teachers for her. I understand why Devon is the only one she knows but it’s sad Leela wants to keep it a secret.
