Call Me Kat Review: Business Council (Season 1 Episode 10)
Call Me Kat Season 1 Episode 10, “Business Council,” finally attempts to explore the friendship between Kat and Carter.
We’ve been waiting to see Kat the businesswoman for a while. Unfortunately, we still end up with a rushed story that feels like it is missing pieces of the puzzle.
The episode is so busy with sight gags and funny names, it never actually examines Kat and Carter’s friendship.
They fight, make some jokes, then makeup without any real discussion of their disagreement. In the end, they respectfully agree to disagree, and nothing is really affected.
When Kat joins the local business council and doesn’t vote in Carter’s favor on a big issue, their friendship is in serious trouble. The rest of the episode is spent with the pair fighting over Kat’s vote in ridiculous ways.
This could’ve been the episode where we finally get to learn more about Carter, but instead he’s still stuck as the one-liner guy.
We have heard a lot about his ex and son, so clearly there are aspects of his life waiting to be explored.
At the very least, if his desire to keep the bar open later had been mentioned before now, it would’ve made Kat’s vote against him seem more important.
The one good thing to come out of his story is the neighborhood business council led by guest star Yvette Nicole Brown as Marlene. The quirky group of locals who show up at the meeting are hilarious, and I would like to see some of them stop by again.
It actually makes us realize that other than the café and bar, we know nothing about the rest of the neighborhood. The mom with a newborn, who lives across from a bar, seems like someone we should’ve met sooner.
As usual, Leslie Jordan is the highlight of the episode when Phil helps Randi with a photography assignment.
Since the main story is such a letdown, these two are a saving grace. Their enthusiastic support for one another is what keeps us tuning in each week.
Anytime they have scenes together it’s guaranteed to be hilarious and worth the price of admission. It’s a consistent problem that the supporting story is always funnier and more interesting than the main story.
If there’s one thing keeping the show from reaching its potential and being the fresh comedy we know it can be, it’s the unbalanced storytelling. It often leaves plot holes and characters unexamined, which leads to uneven episodes.
We’re in the homestretch of Call Me Kat’s Season 1 run, and it feels like we’ve hit the show’s plateau.
Sure, it makes us laugh at times, but we’ve basically seen everything the series has to offer. There’s no next level for it to reveal.
Considering how fun the early episodes were, I had strong expectations for the rest of the season but this episode proves that the series has settled comfortably into average sitcom territory.
We wanted to love Call Me Kat, and we did at first but now the writing, or in this case lack of storytelling, is on the wall. Excuse me, I’ve got laundry to fold while this plays in the background.
