Preview — This Is Us Season 5 Episode 6: Birth Mother

Previews, This is Us

Randall Pearson cannot catch a break.

The poor man’s suffering has been the backbone of this series for some time and now that Randall is finally moving forward with therapy, This Is Us Season 5 Episode 6, “Birth Mother,” is pushing him even further.

An episode devoted entirely to the mystery of Randall’s birth mother will certainly test the limits of his character and the family lore This Is Us continues to build on, but it’s only right we see the full circumstances surrounding Randall’s parentage come to light.

Thankfully for Randall, by confronting his past head-on he could potentially find the closure he needs with his biological family to move forward with his life.

The addition of Hai tells us Laurel lived a full life after William fled from the apartment that day, but she didn’t necessarily live her best life and she most certainly kept tabs on Randall in some capacity. A revelation that could alter this show’s story once again.

The preview of this episode suggests she spends time incarcerated and struggles with knowing she has a son somewhere out there that she will never know. However, there is a lot of context and explanation as to why she never met Randall that still needs to be uncovered.

Her story won’t be an easy one to tell given the circumstance surrounding her grief of losing a son that ultimately follows her until she passes away in 2015.

Randall and Beth are making the trip to New Orleans to share in her memory with Hai and while it’s looking to be a traditionally difficult episode full of sorrow and unearthed secrets, there will surely be a lot of beauty in Laurel’s world to bask in as well.

This Is Us has brought us some of its best storytelling with William. It’s only right Laurel gets the same treatment.
