Nancy Drew Review: The Reunion of Lost Souls (Season 2 Episode 2)

Nancy Drew, Reviews

The idea of a season-long plot arc is suddenly questionable. Nancy Drew Season 2 Episode 2, “The Reunion of Lost Souls,” leaves the Drew Crew with a mere three days to save their own lives. It’s pretty good motivation to accomplish a lot of things.

It does seem a little odd, then, that’d we’d devote an entire episode—and only one episode—to Nick being haunted by a sort of Marvin family poltergeist seeking to reunite with other past victims of the aglaeca who didn’t manage to escape their fates.

Even with the time crunch, it would be nice to have the chance to explore these characters more. At the moment, they are merely reminders of the stakes, but it could be interesting to see them as actual reflections of their present-day counterparts.

As a self-contained storyline, it’s effectively creepy and gives a lot of satisfying moments, from finally giving Nick an episode on center stage to giving us the chance to meet his intense and protective mother who wants him to leave the town that scarred his youth.

It’s been a while since we’ve been reminded of Nick’s conviction and Carson’s role as his lawyer. The latter causes Edith to be much more friendly toward Nancy than toward George, who is currently dating her son.

By the end of the episode, George has both stood protectively by Nick against an entity determined to kill him and gone to explain her own case directly to his mother. Romance has understandably been on the back burner lately, but it’s a strong argument for this ship to sail on.

Meeting Edith and seeing the love and tumult in her relationship with her son is a broader reminder of the stakes the Drew Crew face. They all currently have fractured relationships in their lives that leave the potential for unfinished business.

With Carson currently avoiding his house to give Nancy space, it’s Ace who inadvertently stumbles into a personal interaction with him. Ace has always been the most easygoing of the Drew Crew and it fits that he’d be the one to offer him at least some empathy.

Though Nancy isn’t exactly thrilled to hear about the encounter, she also isn’t as angry as she might have been with her anger more fresh. It’s the first real hint we see of her stance softening, and in culminates in a symbolic attempt to reach out.

The most prominent reason for this is the same one that brings Edith into town. Nancy’s worked hard to keep her father and feelings at a distance. But confronting her own death makes that concept of unfinished business a lot more real.

We know Nancy can’t die. Besides the fact this would doom the series, there’s just no time for her to confront everything she needs to before the most imminent threat reaches its climax. Even when its over, there will be a long road to walk.

Still, this is an important first step, and could carry weight for another romance as well. It matters that Ace is taking on a role of mediator just as he and Nancy look like they could become an item, and potential shippers should be hopeful.

I like the notion that the Drew Crew is thus far totally okay with what almost amounts to trading love interests. Before I get fully on board, though, I’d like to give them more time. If nothing else, to be in it for the long haul, we first need everyone to survive the week.
