Call Me Kat Review: Therapy (Season 1 Episode 4)

Call Me Kat, Reviews

On Call Me Kat Season 1 Episode 4, “Therapy,” we finally get answers to our questions about Kat’s relationship with her mother Sheila.

When Sheila stays with Kat for the weekend, rearranging and taking over her life in the process, the pair end up in therapy.

Until now, we’ve only seen Sheila criticizing Kat. We know she loves her daughter, we just haven’t seen her be very supportive of Kat’s quirkiness.

It’s obvious they never really dealt with the death of Kat’s dad, so it’s no surprise that he comes up during therapy.

It is great to see Swoosie Kurtz get to show another side to Sheila. If I’m being honest, she’s been wasted in the first three episodes.

As Kat and Sheila finally talk through some of their grief, it finally feels like Kurtz and Mayim Bialik get to play a realistic mother/daughter relationship.

As funny as their bickering is, it’s one-note. We need to see all aspects of their relationship, not just the comedic and negative parts.

When given the freedom to like each other, Kurtz and Bialik have great chemistry.

Things don’t work out with their therapist, so I would like to see a recurring theme of them trying out new therapists every few episodes.

We get to hear a lot about Kat’s father Harley, and we’re left wondering if we’ll ever see him in some capacity. If there’s ever a dream sequence or flashback, who do you want to see play Harley?

Since mothers are the theme of this episode, we got to see how far Phil would go for his mother as he and Randi get marijuana-infused cooking oil to put in special sticky buns for his mom’s glaucoma.

Of course, this all leads to Phil eating one of the buns, and Leslie Jordan once again putting on a comedy clinic.

It’s hardly the first time we’ve seen someone do the accidentally high routine. However, Jordan is so hilariously committed to Phil’s belief that he’s invisible, it is another show-stealing performance.

Honestly, I am running out of adjectives to describe how amazingly funny Jordan is every week, but since his talent shows no signs of slipping, I’ll just invest in a thesaurus.

At this point in the series, we’ve had a chance to get to know everyone except Randi. Kyla Pratt is doing solid work as the supportive, fun friend, but it’s time for her to get a little more to do than join in Phil’s shenanigans.

We get a glimpse into her life when she calls her mom after not speaking for a year, so let us learn more about her life.

Call Me Kat is an absurd comedy, best described as an acquired taste. It’s not going to be for everyone. Although, it’s impossible to not be completely charmed by a “Careless Whisper” sing-along to close the show.

It also has a firm grasp of what kind of show it is and much like its title character, this show doesn’t care if you don’t get how fun it is.
