Call Me Kat Review: Cake (Season 1 Episode 5)
Relationship chaos abounds on Call Me Kat Season 1 Episode 5, “Cake.”
Kat’s recurring dream about wanting to kiss Max pushes her to try and finally figure out if he has feelings for her.
We have discussed Kat and Max’s relationship before, and one major question that has yet to be answered is are they actually in a will they/won’t they scenario?

So far, we’ve only seen feelings from Kat’s side, while Max has expressed nothing but supportive friendship. When he kisses her to give her closure on her dream, it couldn’t be less hot.
There’s a lack of romantic chemistry between Mayim Bialik and Cheyenne Jackson. Both are great, however, they definitely don’t have that spark that launches TV ships. When Kat has her ridiculous, yet romantic, dream about Max, I’m just not feeling it.
If the series continues, we need to see Kat out in the world showing genuine interest in other guys. If there is eventually a romance between Kat and Max, seeing them with separate lives will make viewers more invested in them as a couple.

Sadly, Kat suffers a classic sitcom mishap as she overhears Max saying he can’t date her because they’ve been friends for so long. She’s heartbroken, has an awkward conversation with Max, then quickly realizes it’s for the best.
Honestly, I’m happy the show is letting Kat and the audience move on.
Dragging this out is cruel to the character, and doesn’t allow her to develop. This has us excited about the prospect of getting to know Kat away from her feelings for Max.
While Kat interprets her dreams, the man marrying Phil’s ex wants the cafe to make his wedding cake. Not knowing who he’s really asking, Kat declines and he accuses the cafe of discrimination.

This gives us a chance to see Leslie Jordan play Phil’s heartbreak.
Of course, he’s still the center of attention, but the actor shows that he’s more than over the top comedy. His TV experience is evident in how he portrays what is underneath all the slapstick as Phil is still devastated by the end of his relationship.
In the end, it’s Kat’s resolution of her feelings for Max that gives Phil the strength to bake the cake and find his own closure.
The one major complaint about these first five episodes is that we haven’t spent enough time with Kyla Pratt’s Randi. Although the series hasn’t given her character much to do, the actress has done a great job of making Randi more than just the sassy best friend.

The little hints she drops about Randi’s adventurous life has us extra curious about what she’s up to when she leaves the cafe. Moving forward, we need more Randi centric episodes.
As silly as Call Me Kat can be, this was a strong showcase for the layers that it can deliver when it tries.
Particularly, Max and Carter’s discussion of Kat’s feelings as she unknowingly listens is the highlight of the episode. It is a rare real-world moment in the middle of the absurdity, reminding viewers just how good the cast is.
More than any of the other episodes, “Cake” highlights this show’s potential as it finds its tone.
