The Outpost Review: She is Not a God (Season 3 Episode 9)

Reviews, The Outpost

Mistakes come in big and little packages. Some are committed and quickly forgotten about, while others have the potential to affect our entire lives. We always have options on how we handle our mistakes, and our favorite characters of The Outpost demonstrate this during this week’s episode.

The Outpost Season 3 Episode 9, “She is Not a God,” starts with Gwynn making a major decision. As we know from seasons past, Gwynn’s decisions often come back to bite her in the rear. This decision is no different, and Zed even warns her ahead of time.

Gwynn holds the lives of The Red Guards in her hands. Their loyalty to The Prime Order has caused them to commit many heinous crimes against The Outpost and Gwynn personally. She has all the right to cut off these men’s heads without a second thought, but she chooses to have compassion.

Gwynn realizes these men have acted no differently than the Blackbloods when they came into town. They enslaved her people, spat on them, and made them suffer without food.

If I was the ruler of The Outpost, I’d be bloodthirsty for vengeance.

Instead, Gwynn only asks them to do one simple task. These men need to pledge loyalty to Gwynn and The Outpost.

Here’s the funny thing — these guys actually have to think about it!

If I basically had a sword to my throat, I’d pledge allegiance to a bologna sandwich. But not these guys, they have to see with their own eyes that Two is a weak and fallible human.

Gwynn shows them just that causing the men to fold like a house of cards. Zed isn’t happy about it but with Gwynn being queen, he can’t do much about it.

Typically, having compassion is a good thing. It frees us from hatred and ill feelings towards others.

If we hold in these kinds of emotions, we essentially poison ourselves and those around us. Giving into compassion means letting go and hoping for the best.

Unfortunately, The Red Guards take no time in breaking their promise to Gwynn. It appears they have planned this moment the whole time. Through blood, violence, and deceit, they go to free the one they worship.

But before these dastardly men break out their demigod, Talon has a one-on-one with the infamous Two.

Two, what a despicable woman. She has so much hate in her heart. Her spite for Talon practically drips from her lips.

Using that hate, Two attempts to shame Talon for her actions on freeing Yavalla. The sad part is that Two isn’t completely wrong.

Talon did whatever she could to help the people of The Outpost, but eventually, she got stuck in a corner. Her love for her friends wasn’t a mistake per se, but it is easy to view it as one through someone else’s eyes.

After all, if Yavalla wasn’t freed, The Outpost and the rest of the world wouldn’t be in their current predicament.

Two tells Talon this straight to her face without mixing any words of sympathy in-between. She wants Talon to be defeated by regret but Talon doesn’t play her games.

Gwynn and Talon are in the same situation here. Their decisions to help others were made out of the best of intentions but as the saying goes, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Both Gwynn and Talon have a decent amount of blood on their hands. Their well-intended gambles never paid-off, at least not the way they intended. Knowing this should all but destroy them.

Instead, Gwynn and Talon refuse to let their mistakes define them. They pick themselves up from where they have fallen and choose to carry on.

This is a lesson I definitely need to learn!

Instead of being defeated by their own actions, they rise up stronger learning from their mistakes and refusing to lower their heads in misery. These two wonderful protagonists are doing it right.

Tobin, on the other hand, needs things spelled out for him.

His marriage to Falista is exposed to Gwynn in the most horrible of ways. The shock to Gwynn and Tobin’s relationship is audible within the silent treatment she gives him. Oh, the agony of being shot down by the one you love.

Tobin is absolutely crushed.

I can’t blame him. He also made his decision with the best of intentions hoping to only bring peace — yet bringing turmoil instead.

Tobin’s reaction is to drown his sorrows at the brewery. Although realistic, this option is the least salvageable one.

Two: Some things are better left unfound!

Misery loves company, and that company pairs well with a couple of cold ones. At least it seems to at first. Eventually, you will realize that no matter the amount you drink, the alcohol only acts as a bandaid for a broken arm.

Fortunately, Falista sees her husband’s misery and chooses to put him in his place.

I’m going to go ahead and say that Falista would have made a great coach. Her quasi pep talk hits all the right notes, at first talking down to Tobin but then giving him the potential to get better.

She tells him that the grass can be greener but first, he has to water it.

Like Gwynn and Talon, Tobin needs to act appropriately to the given circumstances. He may not be where he planned on being, but that doesn’t mean he can’t become something more.

We too need to learn this.

You may have been born into a poor family with no financial means to go to college, but that doesn’t need to stop you from using your brain to learn everything you can.

If you make the mistake of letting your circumstances get the best of you, you may be defeated — not by life but by your own demeanor.

Instead, apply for scholarships, study your brains out, and overturn your current situation into a brighter future.

Things may not turn out perfect — hell, they never do — but choosing to die where you have fallen will get you absolutely nowhere.

Rise up, and never give in. You never know who is being inspired by the path you have taken.
