Filthy Rich Review: Hebrews 9:15 (Season 1 Episode 6)

Filthy Rich, Reviews

Tina definitely lights a stick of dynamite by going on the record for Luke Taylor on Filthy Rich Season 1 Episode 6, “Hebrews 9:15,” but the explosion isn’t as loud as we expected it to be.

Luke Taylor’s quest for the truth about Eugene Monreaux and the 18:20 is just a quest until it’s in print somewhere, so we haven’t discussed it much in previous reviews.

But after she throws her hissy fit and a few pillows at the TV, Margaret is able to clean up her part of the mess quite quickly, since all Ginger cares about is money.

To her credit, she at least makes sure Eric, Rose, Antonio, and Jason are part of the deal. But she’s guilty of just as much manipulation as every other woman on the show, though my sympathies lie with her because getting kidnnapped can’t have been fun.

The episode focuses more on the fact that so many characters can no longer willfully hold wool over their own eyes in regards to all of the corruption at The Sunshine Network.

Hebrews 9:15 says

For this reason, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.”

In essence, I believe this passage is relevant to the episode because all of the Monreaux kids are uncovering different truths about their family business. Their knowledge will hopefully set them free, at least in the sense that those who want to stay at Sunshine can work to end corruption there.

That sounds like a fairy tale ending, which I predict isn’t in the cards for anyone on Filthy Rich. Reverend Paul has shaped up to be the biggest obstacle in the way of that goal.

This comes as no surprise; it’s just frustrating because out of all of the men in the 18:20, he’s the most manipulative and capable of chasing all of the Monreaux kids away if that’s what he wants to do.

He’s of course stronger with men like Townes Dockerty at his side, at least where cash flow is concerned. But I’m not sure if or why we are meant to care at all that Townes is dead.

He is reviving Margaret’s perfume business from the dead, but all of the papers to make that happen appear to be signed.

Not that we’d be crying in the corner if the deal falls through. Margaret probably doesn’t know any of the gritty details about how the 18:20 runs and Hagamond Sheen’s orders to do anything necessary to make problems disappear for them.

But turning a blind eye to a mess just because if you know about it you might feel guilty doesn’t make you innocent.

It’s hard as ever to root for any character on Filthy Rich, and that’s the series’ fatal flaw

It’s interesting to examine the degree of culpability that any one of the female characters has in allowing bad behavior to continue. But even if they’re victims of manipulation, they’re not likable.

Take Becky for example. The scene between her and Reverand Paul makes me believe that her brother somehow manipulated her into getting pregnant with Eric’s baby for financial reasons only.

It’s clear now that she didn’t prey on him out of pure desire. She appears to be a lesbian rather than bisexual just from how rigid she is where physically touching Eric is concerned.

It’s horrible to be manipulated by your brother and/or your religion to suppress your sexuality for financial gain. I’m glad Becky is slowly finding herself.

She’s still one of the harder characters to root for. (Though she does have the best line of the episode when she demands someone drop a house on Ginger after her Wizard Of Oz-themed speech.)

I don’t have strong feelings about who wins or loses any of these battles, and it’s become only mildly interesting to watch them.

The real Mark is the character who deserves the most out of everyone. But Filthy Rich loses major points with me by portraying a disabled character as suicidal.

This will never be OK, and it’s alarming that it’s an acceptable trope, even on a satire. I happen to be a disabled writer who must mention such horrifying things. But hopefully more people begin to notice and speak out every time it’s implied that death is better than disability on TV.

Mark may be in pain right now and emotionally struggling, but death isn’t a better alternative to being a disabled millionaire at all, so I hope someone gives him the news, and soon.
