What to Stream in October: The Right Stuff, Emily in Paris, The Mandalorian
If you ever feel like you’re the last to know about a new TV show or movie that’s streaming, our What to Stream articles are for you. We’ve gathered our picks of movies and series premiering on various streaming platforms in October that you’ll definitely want to watch.
There are certainly a number of spooky shows to get you in the Halloween mood, such as The Haunting of Bly Manor and Monsterland. But we’ve also selected some not so scary picks as well, like The Mandalorian Season 2 and Star Trek: Discovery Season 3.
Here are our recommendations for what to stream in October:
Emily in Paris (Netflix) – October 2

Emily in Paris follows Emily, a twenty-something marketing executive from Chicago, as she steps into her new life in Paris after landing her dream job. Emily in Paris premieres on Netflix on October 2.

Monsterland (Hulu) – October 2

Monsterland is an 8-part anthology that will introduce you to various monsters and supernatural creatures, telling you one horrifying tale after another. Monsterland debuts on October 2 on Hulu.
Series Description: Encounters with mermaids, fallen angels, and other strange beasts drive broken people to desperate acts in Monsterland, an anthology series based on the collection of stories from Nathan Ballingrud’s “North American Lake Monsters”.
The Lie (Amazon Prime Video) – October 6

Two parents have to decide how far they would go to protect their daughter after she kills her best friend. The Lie premieres on October 6 on Amazon Prime Video.
Film Description: When their teenaged daughter confesses to impulsively killing her best friend, two desperate parents attempt to cover up the horrific crime, leading them into a complicated web of lies and deception. The Right Stuff (Disney+) – October 9

The Right Stuff, based on the novel of the same name by Tom Wolfe, details the early days of NASA and the selection the Mercury 7, America’s first astronauts. The Right Stuff premieres on Disney+ on October 15.
Series Description: At the height of the Cold War in 1959, the Soviet Union dominates the space race. To combat a national sentiment of fear and decline, the U.S. government conceives of NASA’s Project Mercury, igPhotoniting a space race with the Soviets and making instant celebrities of a handful of the military’s most accomplished test pilots. These individuals, who come to be known as the Mercury Seven, are forged into heroes long before they have achieved a single heroic act. The nation’s best engineers estimate they need several decades to make it into outer space. They are given two years.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (Netflix) – October 9

The Haunting of Bly Manor is the second installment in The Haunting of Hill House anthology and is inspired by Henry James’ A Turn of the Screw. The Haunting of Bly Manor premieres on October 9 on Netflix.
Series Description: After an au pair’s tragic death, Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas) hires a young American nanny (Victoria Pedretti) to care for his orphaned niece and nephew (Amelie Bea Smith, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) who reside at Bly Manor with the estate’s chef Owen (Rahul Kohli), groundskeeper Jamie (Amelia Eve) and housekeeper, Mrs. Grose (T’Nia Miller). But all is not as it seems at the manor, and centuries of dark secrets of love and loss are waiting to be unearthed in this chilling gothic romance. At Bly Manor, dead doesn’t mean gone.
A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote (HBO Max) – October 15

The original cast of The West Wing reunites in order to support When We All Vote, a non-profit and nonpartisan organization co-chaired by Michelle Obama, which was founded in order to increase participation in American elections.
The special will feature Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Martin Sheen reprising their roles and performing a special theatrical stage presentation of The West Wing Season 3 Episode 14, “Hartsfield’s Landing.”
As if that isn’t exciting enough, there will be act breaks with special appearances by Michelle Obama, President Bill Clinton, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote will be available on HBO Max on October 15.
Star Trek Discovery Season 3 (CBS All Access) – October 15

We’re headed to the year 3188 with Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, which is lightyears beyond any other existing canon in Star Trek. Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 debuts on October 15 on CBS All Access.
Series Description: After following Commander Burnham into the wormhole in the second season finale, season three of Star Trek: Discovery finds the U.S.S. Discovery crew landing into an unknown future far from the home they once knew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the U.S.S. Discovery crew, along with the help of some new friends, must work together to restore hope to the Federation.
Helstrom (Hulu) – October 16

Hulu’s latest original is a co-production between Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Helstrom follows Daimon and Ana Helstrom as they hunt down the supernatural in this very dark new series. Helstrom drops on Hulu on October 16.
Series Description: As the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Helstrom follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.
Rebecca (Netflix) – October 21

The latest adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s gothic novel stars Lily James and Armie Hammer and promises to be a haunting, psychological tale. Rebecca premieres on Netflix on October 21.
Film Description: After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley, her new husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast. Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by Manderley’s sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas). Directed by Ben Wheatley (High Rise, Free Fire) and produced by Working Title Films (Emma, Darkest Hour), REBECCA is a mesmerising and gorgeously rendered psychological thriller based on Daphne du Maurier’s beloved 1938 gothic novel.
On The Rocks (Apple TV+) – October 23

There’s no better way to figure out if your husband is cheating on you than to follow him around New York with the help of your father. That’s exactly what Laura does after her father expresses concern that Laura’s husband is lying about having so many business trips. On The Rocks premieres October 23 on Apple TV+.
Film Description: Laura (Rashida Jones) thinks she’s happily hitched, but when her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) starts logging late hours at the office with a new co-worker, Laura begins to fear the worst. She turns to the one man she suspects may have insight: her charming, impulsive father Felix (Bill Murray), who insists they investigate the situation. As the two begin prowling New York at night, careening from uptown parties to downtown hotspots, they discover at the heart of their journey lies their own relationship.
The Mandalorian Season 2 (Disney+) – October 30

It has been too long since we were graced with Baby Yoda on our screens. Season 2 follows The Mandalorian on his arduous journey to bring Baby Yoda home. The Mandalorian Season 2 premieres on October 30 on Disney+.
Series Description: The Mandalorian and the Child continue their journey, facing enemies and rallying allies as they make their way through a dangerous galaxy in the tumultuous era after the collapse of the Galactic Empire.
Truth Seekers (Amazon Prime Video) – October 30

From the minds of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg comes Truth Seekers, a supernatural comedy series that follows a group of part-time paranormal investigators. Truth Seekers premieres on October 30 on Amazon Prime Video.
Series Description: Truth Seekers is a supernatural comedy series about a team of part-time paranormal investigators who work to uncover and film ghost sightings across the UK, sharing their adventures on an online channel for all to see. However, as they stake out haunted churches, underground bunkers and abandoned hospitals with their array of homemade ghost-detecting gizmos, their supernatural experiences grow more frequent, more terrifying and even deadly, as they begin to uncover a conspiracy that could bring about Armageddon for the entire human race.
