Sisters of the Groom Review: Wedding Weeks are Sometimes Forgettable

Reviews, TV Movies

The title of UPtv’s Sisters of the Groom is as confusing as the plot. The story is barely about sisters Lisa and Amanda and their horrible matchmaking skills. They get lost in the sea of blondes that fill up the “C” plots in the movie.

Luckily, the plots that matter have sisters that are easier to tell apart and the chemistry between romantic partners is present and watchable, even if it’s not on fire.

Thank goodness for that chemistry, because some other key elements that make up a good movie in any genre are missing here.

The script is Sisters of the Groom‘s biggest weakness. It’s a shame, because with the right vessel, the entire ensemble of actors could’ve brought something a bit magical to life.

It’s hard to say exactly where things go wrong because it’s impossible to know what story to focus on while watching.

The sisters are trying to get Jason back together with Cassie, Jason and Sarah hate each other but need each other, they’re both trying to navigate turning points in their careers, plus, there are pre-wedding events to get through.

It’s so much easier to ignore anything that might be considered the main storyline and invest in the “B” plot.

Sarah and Molly are the sisters that matter in this story, and Molly Davis Catering almost emerges as the hero that’s easiest for us to root for.

Food is the heart of this story and it’s a shame someone didn’t realize that sooner and streamline the plot. As the business owner, Molly deserves so much more focus than she gets as “sister of the protagonist.”

Furthermore, Molly and Ben have the best chemistry of all of the romantic partners. They come close to stealing the spotlight and writing a whole new movie for themselves.

Molly’s name is on the business that Sarah puts in danger and is trying to salvage, for goodness sake. Watching someone have to learn to work with their ex again to save their business and rekindle a spark along the way is an extremely compelling story.

Sarah is lovely, but sometimes it’s hard to understand why she’s the focus. Molly has so much more to lose and gain throughout the entire movie.

The good news for Sarah is that she and Molly as a family unit need us more than the Quinn family does. They only have each other.

The latter family has each other to lean on, plus a few spouses. It’s sad to lose a parent but at least they have one who is both successful and invested in their happiness.

A Quinn sibling could have been completely erased to develop Molly and Sarah’s relationship even further and the movie would only be better. Ironically, the groom in the title is the one with the least relevance.

There is another topic in Sisters of the Groom that deserves more screen time.

Amanda and Henry’s adoption struggle is necessary to see on TV. It’s a shame that one pep talk with her dad re-energizes Amanda, saves her marriage, and eventually gets her the “happily ever after” child she and Henry have always wanted.

Even on a TV movie, it’s possible to go deeper than Sisters of the Groom does with the adoption story.

It’s a sweet movie. But there is so much going on that it’s difficult to know where to look, let alone what message to pull away from it.

There is potential throughout and a heart somewhere, but Sisters of the Groom lacks a standout element to make it memorable.
