The Baker and The Beauty Review: Side Effects (Season 1 Episode 6)
Vanessa’s interview causes ripples among the Garcia family as Noa and Daniel go on the offensive on The Baker and The Beauty Season 1 Episode 6, “Side Effects.”
The interview bomb drops, taking down more than just Daniel and Noa with it as its far-reaching effects lead to trouble for Natalie at school and the bakery as the reporter continues stirring the pot.
The show has gone from sunshine and rainbows to genuine problems that are difficult to get out of in record time. But even with the world falling around them, the Garcia’s come together most endearingly.

DAVID DEL RIO, BELISSA ESCOBEDO
As details about Daniel and Noa’s first meetings are revealed, the Garcia’s deal with their issues, figuring out where loyalties lie.
The conversation about loyalty to family and loyalty to self is impressive, especially in the context of such a tight-knit family unit like the Garcia’s. They seem like the family that has always stood together and shared a common goal for so long.
So to see them now grappling with their desires and trying to find the compromise with the family and setting some sort of limitation for what kind of family strife they can all deal with is quickly becoming one of the more engaging stories.

VICTOR RASUK, CARLOS GîMEZ
While Natalie unquestioningly takes one for the team to defend her family’s name at school, it takes Daniel a challenging conversation with his family to see their point of view and gain some insight into what they’ve been dealing with beyond their issues.
The family aspect adds some grounded tension to the story. Still, it pulls the family together for a moment, in the attempted demolition of the wall between the future café and the bakery.
Of course, that leaves the Garcia’s with an unintended consequence in being forced to close the bakery.

LISA VIDAL, CARLOS GîMEZ, PAUL BEN-VICTOR
What will the Garcia’s do about their bakery? What other consequences will arise because of that interview?
Meanwhile, Lewis is dealing, or rather, avoiding his doctor’s plea to come in for treatment. With the reveal of the diagnosis, comes a heartfelt moment between Piper and Lewis that highlights that he has someone aside from himself in his corner.
Noa’s obliviousness about what’s going on with Lewis is an aspect of the story that I hope they dive deeper into, offering a kind of juxtaposition to her relationship to her father—who happens to be the person behind the board’s decision to remove her from the company.

NATHALIE KELLEY
But only time will tell.
There’s something about Vanessa and the way the story’s played out that adds depth beyond what we initially see to her while subverting the crazy ex-girlfriend trope. I think it comes from the ability to see what her motivations are.
Sure, there’s the need for revenge, but there’s also a need for her to be more than “Vanessa Princesa” or as a meme.
I mean sure, it probably could have been done with more than strategy behind it, but it’s something that you can see and ultimately understand on some level.
Random Thoughts
- Is there something more to the journalist’s story than we see now?
- Seeing Mateo’s dreams dashed is painful and has me wondering what comes next for him.
