Mythic Quest: Quarantine Review: Fun and Togetherness Trumps All

Reviews

A check-in with fantastic characters is in order on Mythic Quest: Quarantine, a special episode that’s dedicated to delivering a fun and uplifting message.

There’s not much in the way of story here, but that’s not the point anyway. It’s about hanging out with everyone sooner than expected, and having a good time with them. For that, the episode works like a charm, a nice little beacon of joy in a darker time in all of our lives.

Brad’s mind games haven’t been affected by the new state of things, the Street Fighter battle tied to the charity money a great way to create another feud between Brad and David.

Part of the fun will always be that David, when he thinks he has things in the bag, never has them in the bag, and so his heartfelt story about becoming an expert in his lonely childhood being turned against him is a hilarious (but depressing) outcome.

It’s the most David outcome possible. He may suffer the loss of some facial additions in the process, but it’s for a good cause, especially now that the amount has been doubled. It’s a win with an asterisk.

There are some fantastic little nods to characters going on throughout, like Jo’s large framed picture of President Reagan in the background or C. W.’s difficulty in getting both audio and video to work. F. Murray Abraham’s C. W. is a bizarre favorite on the show, and pairing him with Jo’s impatience is wonderful.

There are also characters like Carol, who do not appear for long but bring so much to those brief appearances. Her attempt to wrangle Ian while also lamenting about homeschooling her kids is the most relatable moment of the episode, and Naomi Ekperigin stands out even more than on the regular episodes. More of Carol being completely done with things is needed.

The bigger arc comes from Poppy and her dedication to work. The quarantine is affecting everyone in different ways, and to show how Poppy is struggling from the isolation is a poignant moment for the show to tackle. That moment where the code starts compiling and the silence starts setting in is a feeling fellow workaholics know all too well.

Ian coming through for her is such a feel-good moment, not only because it displays how much people coming through in trying times means to someone, but because it signals how far they have come since their growing distance over the first season.

The Rube Goldberg Machine collaboration is the perfect way to cap off the episode, where enthusiasm, teamwork, and hope come together. It’s a moment to just let everyone have a good time and celebrate, and it’s the perfect cap to the episode.

The production itself is a clever use of technology, from filming on iPhones and the glorious technical difficulties that come from all levels of characters’ tech proficiency.

It’s an impressive feat for all of it to come together as it has under constraints and limitations without losing anything in the way of quality. Kudos to the team for keeping the spirit of the show in a different format.

Mythic Quest: Quarantine manages to capture the essence of the show by remaining true to itself and its characters, while also delivering an uplifting message of togetherness. The episode also does a fantastic job to show the new order of business and how difficult that can be, both physically and emotionally, and the toll it can take.

This is a fun, triumphant way to continue the show, even as a one-off. This is one of the best comedy casts out there, and any excuse to spend another episode with them, especially one that is as much fun as this, is more than welcome.
