The Magicians Review: Fillory and Further (Season 5 Episode 13)

Reviews, The Magicians

As the last episode of the series, Santa saves the day and gives a few gifts, Julia goes into labor and fights for her life, Margo pulls a Quentin, and The Beast returns on The Magicians Season 5 Episode 13, “Fillory and Further.”

It’s a sad day to see The Magicians end once and for all, but a ray of light that makes it a little easier to bear is that everyone gets a happy ending. Well, not everyone, but most. Unfortunately, Zelda doesn’t make it out alive as the beast incinerates her with magic after being freed by Sebastian.

After a good look at the entire situation, it’s easy to realize that Martin Chatwin is the whole reason they’re in the predicament to begin with because he pretends to be Sebastian’s partner to escape. If it wasn’t for him, there wouldn’t have been a need to save Fillory and move them all to a new world using the world seed.

So, The Beast is the reason that Fillory goes completely under, but Zelda uses her last living moments to put the portals to the worlds on lockdown so he can’t destroy Fillory. She and Alice’s bond has become quite stable over the past few seasons when it comes to trusting one another, which is why Alice listens to Zelda when she tells her about possessing the power of a master magician.

Alice has been on the fast track to becoming a master magician who no longer needs to rely on the movement of her hands, which is why even with one hand, she’s still strong enough to finish the spell on the world seed. But, she needed to hear it from Zelda, someone she lowkey admires and looks up to as a powerful magician but will never admit.

It’s a sweet moment to be shared between Alice and Zelda, and I hope what she says about merely transferring to another library is right because she deserves to have peace.

It’s crazy to think that Santa is the one who slips Alice the page about the world seed and begins the entire quest for her, without even realizing what he was doing. The only thing he knew is that Alice would want to finish what Quentin was working on, so he hid it in Quentin’s lockbox until she found it. That’s destiny right there.

I admire Margo’s fiery drive and passion for making sure that the mission succeeds no matter what, even if she has to be the one to go down to make it happen. She’s a ruler by nature, and that wouldn’t change even if Margo had never been the king of Fillory because it’s in her blood; she knows how to lead.

Her perseverance and drive to run into a fiery trap she knows she likely won’t escape is a true testament to the character growth that Margo experienced. It brings a tear to my eye, thinking she’ll die doing the same thing that Quentin did, sacrificing herself for the greater good. Thank gosh that Penny figures out he can travel while holding the baby because his timing is magnificent.

As for Penny and Julia, they get to spend their lives together happily with their daughter and plans to find Alice, Fen, Josh, and Margo eventually. I’m overly happy with how Julia’s future turns out because, for a hot moment, it seems as if she may not make it out alive, leaving Penny to be a single father. Nevertheless, Julia persists and gets better because that’s what she does; she’s a fighter.

I love, love, love that Dean Fogg isn’t running around trying to ruin things, but is helping save the plan yet can’t speak due to a spell. Him cutting the umbilical cord and stealing the seed are actions done out of love to try and help because he’s one of the only people who can remember time loops, making him knowledgeable on what works and doesn’t work to save everyone.

It only fits that Dean Fogg does everything in his power one last time to save his students and Fillory from destruction.

It’s a bummer to think that Margo and Eliot could be living the rest of their days alive on separate worlds, but I know that their love will never break and will be the driving force to keep one another going. Margo has Josh right by her side, and now Eliot has Charlton, which I think is absolutely adorable.

It makes perfect sense that Charlton would be the perfect soulmate for Eliot after being locked in his head for so long and knowing how he works and thinks. He doesn’t have to get used to Eliot’s crazy behavior or how he likes to live because he already knows and continues to love that about Eliot.

Overall, I’m beyond pleased with how the series finale plays out. Especially with Margo being the very last scene as she begins her new life as the High King of New Fillory.

Other Thoughts:

  • It’s nice to see that Rupert (Sebastian) makes it out alive and gets to spend the rest of his days with his sister since his intentions were never to harm Fillory in the long run.
  • I can’t believe how accurate Santa’s gifts end up being to what they need, especially Margo’s eye carrier necklace, so Josh could tell her when to sacrifice herself.

Favorite Quotes:

  • “I told you, I told you you were good.” – Santa
  • “This is the best episode ever.” – Hyman
  • “You know, if I learned one thing from Quentin – one – it’s sometimes you sacrifice for those you love.” – Margo
