Supernatural Review: Destiny’s Child (Season 15 Episode 13)

Reviews, Supernatural

So far, Supernatural‘s final season has been a wild ride. A carousel of returning guest stars combined with a final battle for the soul of their world makes for the final season that any fan would want.

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 13, “Destiny’s Child,” checks a number of those boxes. Sam, Dean, Jack, and Castiel make significant progress in their fight against Chuck, and there are a number of returning (and surprising) guest stars to boot.

The only criticism I can even give “Destiny’s Child” is that it’s filled to the brim with fan service and callbacks. But, in this case, it isn’t really a criticism because it works extremely well, and serves up treat after treat for long-time fans.

For instance, what show other than Supernatural would cook up a final season story that includes both Sister Jo (Danneel Ackles) and the demon, Ruby (Genevieve Padalecki) just so that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki’s real life wives could appear together on the show?

On any other show this sounds contrived, but considering that all hands are on deck for the final season and battle against God, it really works well. Sister Jo is always fun, and it’s great to see Ruby again. Beyond the fact that Ackles and Padalecki shared some screen time, there are some incredible references that either meta or a treat for vigilant fans.

Further down the tracks on the “Whoa, returning character!” train comes another surprise – Meg!! Well…sort of.

Castiel has to return to The Empty to speak with Ruby, so Meg (Rachel Miner) is just the form that The Empty takes on to interact with Cas. But she’s still full of references and to see her is an unexpected treat!

Meg/The Empty: Go get her, Pizza Man!

Plus – all of it works to the same end. Sister Jo and Ruby hold secrets to getting Jack leveled up in his training to fight God. And Cas has unfinished business with The Empty.

Really, in a roundabout and special guest filled way, the whole episode is about Jack getting his soul back. This culminates in a powerful scene where he expresses his sorrow and remorse for what happened to Mary. “Destiny’s Child” is mostly a fun, fan service-y episode, but culminates in a truly powerful moment.

Thanks to the latest goings on in the world, this is the last Supernatural we’ll get for some time. All told, it’s a satisfying one that should satisfy cravings for a little while.

 A few stray thoughts:

  • The alternate versions of Sam and Dean can’t be throwaways. My theory? They’re going to be the Lucifer/Michael vessels to bring about the apocalypse.
  • “I have a dumb idea” should sum up about 80% of Supernatural
  • Jack getting his soul back makes perfect sense. He’s the key to everything because he’s the universe’s most powerful being, but he’s influenced by Sam and Dean. Their influence over Jack is the key to everything.
  • That said, I hope Dean can spit out an “I forgive you” to Jack soon.
  • Here’s hoping the world’s closures are short and Supernatural can resume production soon.
