The Resident Review: Last Shot (Season 3 Episode 15)

Reviews, The Resident

Correlation does not equal causation, people!

We love to see the House-style medical mystery unfold on The Resident Season 3 Episode 15, “Last Shot,” and the other tropey (but in a good way) stories too!

She may have the most minor storyline, but for me, Mina packs the most punch on the hiatus-ending episode.

Firstly, her style continues to be unmatched. Those earrings? Are you kidding?! Her costume design enhances our understanding of Mina as a complex and enigmatic individual. I can not say this loudly enough, WE STAN.

Secondly, her relationship with her elderly black cardiac patient, Harold, reminds us how much Mina has grown as a doctor. She is no longer afraid of the intimacy of bedside care.

Finally, Mina goes after a date with Hot Doc Torres. She is flirty, in control, and a beacon of hope to all of us who want to unapologetically go after romance in our lives.

DR. MINA OKAFOR: You drive, no open-toe shoes.

Getting to revel in the jealous face The Raptor makes, no matter how fleeting, is the icing on the cake of this fun and fascinating storyline.

In a departure from the more contemplative The Resident Season 3 Episode 14, “The Flea,” this episode is packed with plot.

You know what, The Resident pulls it off!

Even with the content pushing on the limits of a single episode’s timeframe, each of the plotlines feels developed and nicely-paced.

The mysterious toxin is interesting, and it’s always fun to see Conrad go full Dr. House on a patient’s symptoms.

But the wakeful brain surgery is even more awe-inspiring. The Resident regularly, if not always, brings real-life stories in medical care to its fictional world. This one is no different.

Lucy sang a gorgeous song during her surgery, part of her efforts to ensure the maintenance of her verbal skills.

In real life, symphony violinist Dagmar Turner played her instrument during her brain surgery to ensure she would still be able to make the “delicate hand movements” necessary to play again.

It’s remarkable how the episode folds this astounding brain surgery example into its larger story about Cain’s dereliction of responsibility to patients in favor of fame.

It is a well-orchestrated effort, indeed.

Relief washes over us as we finally realize that Andrea was right. The supplements aren’t killing people and she and Dr. Bell aren’t going to lose everything!

I continue to be shocked by how invested I am in Dr. Bell’s redemption.

Bruce Greenwood lets it happen. He plays Dr. Bell with such empathy that is is easy to see more than one side.

Still, we can not forget that HODAD was not a long-ago memory.

Dr. Bell is no hero.

Honestly, if Bell has truly made the moral progress that he seems to have made, he will step out of the limelight for the TV show gig and offer it to the person responsible for a great deal of that growth: Dr. Kitt Voss.

Hands-down, that would be a hit program.

Another solid Season 3 episode is under the medical ethics drama’s belt. We are grateful the show has bounced back from its brief failing vital signs.

Doctors Notes
  • Devon and Conrad’s sincere hug at the close of the episode is filled with love. I might ship it? Throuple, anyone?
  • No amount of pizza and couch cuddles can make paperwork look fun. It is refreshing to see a medical show refer to the many hours of non-patient labor involved in the profession, though.
  • Alex Rodriguez plays Dr. Ed Torres and he can stay. That’s all I have to say about that – she says as she wipes drool from her face.
  • I miss Dr. Voss.
  • I’m excited for the proposal, but the CoNic wedding is going to be the real deal. Devon and Mina’s speeches are going to break us. Can’t. Wait.
