Station 19 Review: Ice Ice Baby (Season 3 Episode 6)
A blizzard leads to an eventful slumber party with “half of Seattle” on Station 19 Season 3 Episode 6, “Ice Ice Baby.” It’s the most emotional hour of the season yet with some of the highest highs and lowest lows.
Starting with the highs, JJ and Dean are officially parents! The abruptness of JJ’s return has made this whole storyline a bit odd, but their journey on this episode makes the execution forgivable.
A laboring JJ provides a bit of comic relief amongst the heaviness. The contractions fine-tune her into a sharper, wittier, more sarcastic version of herself that makes her whole story rather enjoyable.
Her willingness to masturbate her pain away is classic JJ, and makes me so glad that she’s back. She helps Dean loosen up, so I’m hopeful that she’ll stick around.

Though, is Station 19 hinting at a Vic and Dean romance, or are they just BFF’s and I’m crazy? Don’t answer that latter portion. It sounds ridiculous, but it’s also Shondaland. Nothing is off-limits.
This includes Rigo’s wife! How’s that for a transition? Rigo knows that Jack is sleeping with his wife, and Jack knows that he’s screwed. Jack is REALLY screwed, though, by the looks of it. Rigo’s punch aside, Dean can’t even look at him. This does not bode well for Captain Maya’s reaction. Her head might literally explode.
Talking about the lows, Travis’ call with Pilar reminds us that he is one of the most gentle souls in the Seattle FD. Station 19 has done a great job this season of tying flashbacks to what is happening in the present-day. The past stories go a long way to help us know and understand the characters better.
That’s two weeks in a row now that Jay Hayden has delivered two absolutely gut-wrenching performances. Travis talking Pilar through her final moments allows him to remember just how much his mother means to him.

Plus, Jonathan Bennett playing Travis’ deceased husband, Michael, is perfect casting. Travis and Jonathan have great chemistry, and I hope that that’s not the last we see of the latter.
We have to talk about the lowest of lows, which unfortunately occurs when Andy finally learns the truth.
Empathizing with Andy on this episode is a double-edged sword. She is drowning in a toxic mix of anger and grief, and to add more pain and shock to that is cruel. That’s not to pin this on Pruitt, but more to say that she is human and can only handle so much.
The moment she excuses herself after JJ’s delivery is one of realization, and not the good kind. It’s adrenaline giving way to pain and fear, and the new emotions piling on top of the old. It’s impossible to imagine what Andy is feeling without experiencing a touch of anxiety ourselves.
That might be why Sullivan ignores Vic and consoles her despite everything that has happened between them.

The only thing I would say in a negative way about this episode is that the writers need to get their dog breeds right if they are going to include it – the dog was a Tervuren, not a Malinois – both Belgian Sheep dogs but totally different.
