The Bold Type Review: To Peg Or Not To Peg (Season 4 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Bold Type

Let’s all say it loud and proud one time because it’s going to come up quite often in this review of The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 6, “To Peg Or Not To Peg.” Three, two, one…vagina!

It’s a downright gorgeous word compared to phrases like “down there,” “hoo-ha,” “naughty bits,” or any of the other lame phrases Sabrina George would say to make women feel more “comfortable” in the audience of her wellness talks. (Major props to whoever decided to crown this mean girl a sibling of the meanest of Mean Girls — Regina George.)

There is nothing embarrassing about vaginas. In fact, they are quite amazing when you really think about it: they provide pain, pleasure, and also perform one of the most essential bodily functions we need to stay alive. Few body parts are as versatile as the vagina.

Plus, women are badass for putting up with all of the inequality that comes with having a vagina and still shining.

We get paid less, are expected to parent more, and our uteruses are political battlegrounds for some reason. That’s just the beginning, but I digress.

It’s a mistake to think that Jane’s period would stop her from giving wellness a talk (as this writer did). Vaginal problems are as versatile as it’s functions.

THE BOLD TYPE – “To Peg or Not to Peg” –  (Freeform/Jonathan Wenk) KATIE STEVENS

I’m not in the business of shaming anyone who wants to take their vagina to the spa for a vagacial (whatever that actually is.) But if you do, maybe research what’s going to happen to it during the treatment and consult a doctor about it.

As for Sabrina George’s message — it’s ridiculous. It’s actually a real shame that women were so eager to agree with her at first.

I’ll put it on record. I never want my “down there” or my vagina to smell like cookies.

We’ve come a long way since this writer would sit in her bedroom reading Cosmogirl and wondering why none of the content was actually relatable. But women still put toxic expectations on other women all of the time, even if we don’t always realize it.

It’s why the influencer storyline with Sutton is starting to feel a bit weak. There is no shame in being an “assistant” anything. But even though she works at Scarlet, this notion that Sutton can just “become” an influencer is misguided.

Anyone who sets out with that expectation is going to be disappointed. A more authentic approach would be for her to start a new Instagram account and struggle with the amount of work it takes to keep it up and perform her duties for Oliver. You can’t just start an Instagram and call yourself an influencer.

So, Claire isn’t actually being very rude in that first scene with Sutton. Sutton is just being too sensitive. There’s no shame in making a career out of influencing these days. People rarely snap their fingers and make it happen, though.

There’s really no smooth transition into pegging. If Kat’s happy, we all should be happy for her and that’s really all there is to say about that. Except that she deserves to feel powerful in every setting she’s in — and that strap-on seemed very complicated to put on.

Her “new” label as bisexual is more interesting because if Kat was ever exclusively interested in women I forget when that shift happened.

I support any label Kat wants to use, but hopefully she dates men and women equally on screen. Her new label should not be at the expense of the visability and comfort she provides viewers by unapologetically loving women.

The Fine Print

  • Adena is back on the next episode. Finally! She works for Scarlet.
  • Whoever named characters on this episode is genius because “Dr. Alicia Golden” is as good as “Sabrina George.”
  • Speaking of Dr. Golden, Alex is so much less attractive now that we know he’s “not ready” to date a powerful woman. He says all the right things, but it’s still lame.
  • It’s painful to say this, but Jaqueline’s story is a complete waste of time again.
  • I love the montage of all of the women struggling at home alone. Whether we like it or not, alone time is real.
  • The last shot of the girls holding hands around the triangle ottoman is so beautiful.
  • No one would deny that the scene at the wellness seminar where all of the women stand up and make real confessions about their vaginas is the most powerful, though. I almost got chills.
  • This season is still missing some magic.
