Single Parents Review: Chez Second Grade (Season 2 Episode 15)
Angie needs to fill her gas hole on Single Parents Season 2 Episode 15, “Chez Second Grade,” and it’s up to Will to help her find love on Valentine’s Day, while also repairing the hole in their friendship.
Elsewhere in the episode Big Red has returned to rekindle things with Douglas, Miggy definitely has strep throat, and the kids would not win Top Chef‘s Restaurant Wars.
While it’s wonderful to have Angie and Will back together in all of their awkward glory, Will’s new single status just reminds us that he and Angie have undeniable romantic chemistry that they are not pursuing.

The entire storyline concerning the newly single British dad, Colin, who Angie gets embarrassingly flustered by, is a little predictable.
Its saving grace is giving Angie and Will a chance to talk (or shout) out their frustrations about the things they missed when they were on a hiatus from each other.
Angie: Did you even know that I ate one of those jumbo barrels of Chex Mix? Yeah. And I think I did permanent damage to my colon! I’m seeing a specialist.
Will also may have hit Angie with his car during her Pokemon Go phase. No need to go any further into that. (Though a quick flashback cut could have been hilarious here.)
There’s also the reminder that Will wasn’t present for Graham reconnecting with Derek during Single Parents Season 2 Episode 14, “Yarn and Pebbles,” at a time when Angie needed her BFF the most.
It’s good to see that Will and Angie don’t easily slip back into their shenanigans, and they seem to repair their friendship pretty quickly with Will encouraging Colin to ask Angie on a date in the eleventh hour.
It will be interesting to see if the writers continue to make Angie and Will a little awkward as they try to get back to that place of comfortable trust with each other, or if they drop it here and move forward. It could really go either way, at this point.
We do get the smallest moment of shipping angst as Will looks a bit sad to see Angie leave Chez Second Grade with Colin.
The writers still have to fan that flame, of course, especially on Valentine’s Day.

Douglas and Poppy are celebrating their first Valentine’s Day together as a couple, and while Poppy claims that she’s above archaic February 14 traditions, Douglas wants to make the night special.
A surprise mole check with Big Red leaves him flustered for their date, however.
The return of Big Red could be a bigger deal in terms of Douglas and Poppy; however, the storyline shifting to be about Douglas and his own insecurities about Poppy’s feelings for him is a good move.
Whenever we get a chance to see Douglas be vulnerable it’s a treat, because Brad Garrett plays it so well.
Douglas: Poppy, look, I’m just not used to dating a woman like you. So put together, so steady, so…age appropriate.
It’s also nice to see Poppy kick Big Red to the curb immediately and not have this turn into a drawn-out, overdone love triangle. Douglas and Poppy are more mature than that, something we’ve come to appreciate about their relationship.

Chez Second Grade is not earning a Michelin Star any time soon; however, the makeshift restaurant provides most of the laugh out loud moments and breaks up the tension during the adults’ stories.
The gags are silly, with the kids playing stereotypical restaurant roles poorly. Graham’s $9.00 milks come with terrible advice, they’re paying Sophie NOT to scratch the violin, and the twins are mercy killing salads in the back.
It’s most concerning that Rory bumps his mother’s reservation for an unknown VIP, and forces Poppy and Douglas to sit at a table near the bathroom. He’s ruthless as a host.
The restaurant stuff is all ridiculous, honestly, but it lands, and the episode is made better because of it.
Stray Thoughts
- Was anyone the least bit concerned about Miggy? Or the fact that he definitely gave every one of those kids strep throat?
- Every time a kid pushed a tip jar at an adult, I laughed out loud.
- That gas station stuff was SO bad. Also SO relatable.
- A wine fridge in the teacher’s lounge? What?
- Not going to lie, spaghetti jello sounds interesting and I would try it.
- “The coats have disappeared” kid must return.
