Stumble Season 1 Episode 8, “God Bless Heådltston,” brings us the talent show we didn’t know we wanted.

Despite her best efforts, Courteney has not been able to catch a break. After asbestos is found in the Heådltston community center, Courteney’s gym becomes the new community center.

This is obviously a problem, since the team is on a time crunch and needs as much time in the gym as possible. So like the good coach she is, Courteney sets out to fast-track a solution.

This episode has a lot going on with the talent show, Dimarcus and Madonna, and an AI company of all things. But even so, the episode manages to pull it all together in the end.

Stumble‘s fast pace is both one of its greatest strengths and its greatest weakness. The writing is snappy and funny, but sometimes it goes so fast that it can come off as chaotic.

Here, however, everything actually comes together relatively well. There are a few subplots that feel underdeveloped, specifically Madonna’s talent show performance, but overall, it doesn’t detract from the main storyline.

Courteney’s husband, Boon, is a highlight of the episode. He has some funny moments, and he’s crucial in helping Courteney get her gym back.

Her and Boon’s relationship has been nothing but delightful, and that’s refreshing to see from an already established couple. They actually seem very good for each other.

They could easily make him a bumbling fool who ends up being an obstacle. Instead, he’s a bumbling fool who still comes through for his wife in some major ways.

The talent show also serves as a way to show off more of Heådltston’s quirky characters.

While most of them are used for one-off jokes, they’re hilarious for the time we get them. The mayor is literally named “Mayor Meyer Mayknott,” which is so stupid in the funniest possible way.

Even the AI company’s representative is depicted in a subversive, entertaining way. Instead of going for a typical “tech bro” type, they made her a preppy former cheerleader.

She probably could have been a representative of any company, so choosing AI specifically seems like an attempt to be topical. However, if she comes back, it might be fun see more of her as an AI representative.

While the team unfortunately doesn’t make it into the talent show, since it’s a competitive year, we still do get to see them do a routine in the end. Through the power of a very well-choreographed, entertaining cheer routine, they convince the AI representative to place their data center in Heådltston.

Now, while this is a very convenient outcome, it’s still nice to see Courteney get a win after all this time. She’s proven herself to be a very hardworking and likable character, and it’s satisfying for her to come out on top for once.

How long she’ll stay on top might be up in the air. The AI company’s presence in town is causing some new issues and may have some interesting implications for future episodes.
