Single Parents Review: Welcome to Hilltop! (Season 2 Episode 12)

Reviews, Single Parents

Single Parents Season 2 Episode 12, “Welcome to Hilltop!,” lets Angie take a spin at being Poppy to Poppy, and it’s a lot of fun watching her in a more emotionally supportive role.

This isn’t to say that Angie hasn’t always been supportive, but her brand of support isn’t usually the “so how are you handling this?” method; it’s always more of Poppy’s thing. But that doesn’t mean that Angie is incapable of doing that, as shown during “Welcome to Hilltop!.”

Angie being Poppy (and Douglas having a bit of high ground over Will when it comes to parenting) is an interesting way to shake up the dynamics a bit. It’s nothing drastic, but it allows us to see them taking on different roles in their friendships.

We learn a lot about Miggy during the episode; he is in a polyamorous relationship, and he’s also been in prior relationships with men.

It’s crazy to think just how little we knew about Miggy before this storyline, and the gap in information ends up making sense because Angie “forgot” all these details that Poppy and Miggy have to remind her of. It’s a clever way to reveal some backstory without making it seem like it’s coming out of nowhere.

Thankfully, none of this is done for laughs. Poppy and Angie have a serious moment where they ask questions and learn more about Miggy’s relationship, and in the end, that conversation ends up giving Poppy the tools to handle her issues with Sharon.

Angie: Are youths smart?
Poppy: Did Miggy just teach me something about relationships?

I’m excited to see what’s in store for this thruple. Hopefully, we’ll get to know Brian a little bit more. We’ve spent some time with Miggy and Pronstroller, and we’ve seen their weird chemistry in action, so now it’s time to get to know more about Brian and Miggy.

One thing I’ve noticed since reviewing Single Parents this season is that the show doesn’t always follow through when it comes to continuity. Something big that will happen the episode before — the best friend separation, for instance — isn’t mentioned at all during the next episode.

Single Parents seems to pick and choose when to follow up on events from a prior episode, even something as small as Sophie’s dying of her hair, which could have easily been shown or mentioned in the following episode, isn’t.

It seems strange that neither Will nor Angie brings up the separation to anyone; there’s not even an offhand comment about it. It’s like it never happened.

An offhand comment would’ve been enough; Poppy could’ve asked Angie how she was doing with the whole Will thing, and Angie could’ve brushed her off and switched topics. It doesn’t have to be a big part of this episode, but there should be more of an acknowledgment of events from prior episodes.

It seems like the show is missing out on some great moments by treating certain events as if they happened in a vacuum. New Girls gag of the douchebag jar, for instance, is one of my favorite things from the series, and Single Parents doesn’t really have anything that continually pops up in multiple episodes like that.

Does this bother anyone else or is it just me?

Stray Thoughts:
  • Poppy pointing out that she and Angie are millennials after Angie complains about millennials is my FAVORITE.
  • How does Sophie not know that you can’t just let a parrot fly outside (even if it’s wings weren’t clipped)?
  • Will not hearing Sophie go up into the attic but hearing the thud of Pete falling is hilarious selective hearing.
  • Where did Emma and Amy learn how to dispose of a body? What else have they covered up?!

  • I enjoy this show a lot, the kids are really cute. I couldn’t put my finger on why it seems so disjointed, but you are right – it’s the continuity. It doesn’t always flow well. But it’s always funny and I look forward to each episode. Thanks for the great review.
