The Resident Review: Nurses’ Day (Season 3 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Resident

The Resident Season 3 Episode 6, “Nurses’ Day,” puts the negligent treatment of nurses in the headlights.

The doctors are shown in various states of leisure, from poker games to ostentatious shareholder meetings. Even Dev and Irving have the time to just kind of hang out.

This contrasts with the overworked nurses who are constantly yawning and spreading themselves thin to make a bad situation work.

Nurses do just as much work as doctors, for half the pay, and none of the glory. “Nurses’ Day,” from its title to its closing shot, warns us about the dangers of assuming nurses are superhuman and can be drained dry without deadly consequences.

Jessica is hurt, at a minimum. She could be dead. And it’s all Red Rock’s fault.

Like an establishment that overserves, the hospital has been negligent in its treatment of the nursing staff. In fact, Red Rock is even more responsible than a bartender because Jessica didn’t order her triple shifts.

What Red Rock has done is like if a bartender forced you to drink three shots for every one you ordered. And people’s lives depend on you finishing all the drinks.

I have seen doctors dealing with excessive hours on TV, but nurses are never given that kind of inclusion. The Resident teaches us that we need to consider the whole field of practitioners, not just doctors, when we think about the outcomes of profit-seeking hospitals.

It is absolutely worth noting the gendered experiences of nurses and doctors. Both Mina and Kitt are shown continuing their work outside the normal bounds of their responsibility. All of the nurses we see are women and they band together to protect each other and support each other.

The male doctors are competing against each other and prioritize, “what’s in it for me?”

It is not that the male doctors are bad. Conrad, in particular, is fighting for good. But, the challenges, expectations, and rewards he faces are different than the women. It’s important that we see that.

The subtle showcasing of women’s experiences in the workplace adds to the veracity and power of the stories on the episode.

I will admit that Irving and Dev are my least favorite characters on the show. The jockey storyline is a miss for me.

The joke of a tall woman with a short man is just not my bag.

However, Dev gives Irving really great advice that I want to tack onto my mirror and say to myself every day.

DEV: Don’t let insecurity ruin a good thing.

Honestly, this advice runs the whole gamut of human experience, not just romantic relationships. It applies at work, as a parent, in creative endeavors, and in friendships. Our fears of our own imperfections can erode our relationships and diminish what we have to offer the world.

Dr. Pravesh is a wise man, indeed.

Also wise is whoever on The Resident team decided to put Conrad in a suit. Plainclothes Conrad might be my favorite Conrad.

We wholeheartedly agree with Nic; Dr. Hawkins should put that fitted suit on for every date night, ever.

“Nurses’ Day,” is a low key gem for CoNic content.

I feel giddy when I realize that CoNic is hosting the game night. And then, when Conrad is bonding so sweetly with his father, the first thing he wants to share is the chickens.

STAWP.

Even though they are going through such a stressful time, I can’t help but feel like this is also their best life.

The easy and fluid way the two communicate is incredibly sweet. It is 100 percent clear they are best friends. They are also constantly flirting with each other.

Then we meet AJ’s birth mom and she is SO much like Mina.

Her backbone is thick and made of steel without compromising the soundness of her heart. She’s practical above all else. That realism brought her to her decision to let her son go.

Mina is the same way. She is pure and honest. She thinks before she feels. But, she feels deeply.

AJ is primed to understand and connect with his bio mom because of his connection with Mina.

That is a beautiful and sacred thing for Minator.

The pay off for waiting for these lovers to get down is going to be huge.

The Resident delivers significant messages and delightful moments on “Nurses’ Day.” Season 3 is kicking butt and educating us at the same time.

Doctors Notes
  • Noone holds back tears like Malcolm-Jamal Warner. That blinking BROKE ME.
  • Kitt Voss calls out Bell so hard, and he loves it. She’s right, too. He is complicit. Let’s see how Bell reacts when Voss goes around him to achieve her goals. Bell needs to be needed. Watch out for casualties.
  • Dr. Okafor is the most fashionable person on TV right now. Even with her white coat covering her ensembles, they sing.
  • Nic could be blamed for Jessica’s accident because she allowed her to cover the shift. Even though it is rage-inducing, this could be a really fascinating direction for the story.
  • If I had to choose between suit-Conrad and casual long-sleeve tee-Conrad, I’d choose long-sleeve. No regrets.
  • The sound editing on the episode is excellent. The voices are rich and delicious.
  • Cain remains a mystery. A gross, gross, mystery.
