A Million Little Things Review: Austin (Season 2 Episode 5)

A Million Little Things, Reviews

A Million Little Things Season 2 Episode 5, “austin,” makes one fact clear: Charlotte Dixon’s actual name is Charlotte Saville, and it’s about time everyone on the show knows it, no matter how old they are.

It’s an episode about a lot of things — and aboutnothing at all.

Rome and Regina are the couple that deserves the most attention on the episode, and they do get some. Yet, by the end of the hour, viewers don’t know anything new about their situation.

They need to talk. We’ve probably known that since before the Season 1 finale. They don’t have to decide whether or not to have kids in one scene, but it’s already five episodes into Season 2.

Fans deserve more than unnatural interruptions and vague dialogue at this point. Let’s see the conversation and all of the emotion that comes with it.

“What now?” isn’t progress.

Progress may come soon, and it will be welcome — but also a little bit too late to be praised.

A plot that would benefit from some speeding up is Maggie and Gary’s separation. It’s being foreshadowed so strongly on this episode that Maggie may as well have just been moved out of the apartment at the end.

If Eric’s presence in her life suddenly makes Maggie realize that she needs space to learn how to live alone, that’s fine.

I just don’t want to see it coming so clearly from miles away that by the time I get close enough, I’m begging for it to just happen already.

That brings us back to Charlotte. The kids are going to find out who her actual parents are eventually.

On this episode, we learn that Theo wants a sister and Delilah is actually incapable of ignoring the fact that Eddie is her daughter’s father.

That statement is not written with judgment. If she’s actually able to raise Charlotte as Jon’s daughter, it would not feel so wrong to her to leave Eddie out of the birth announcement.

Sophie and Danny will be furious, and there will be a ton to explain to Theo.

However, if Katherine is ready to give up her dream of moving to Austin so that Eddie can be in Charlie’s life, it’s time to tell the kids already.

Speaking of those two, it’s so much fun to meet their alter egos, Kat and Edward from Texas, no accents included.

Katherine deserves a husband who can escape the harsh reality that he created in their marriage with her.

Plus, it’s good to know they’re having sex.

They might benefit from therapy and a little bit more talking. The story is moving though, so let’s not complain.

This is a good episode of A Million Little Things. It’s definitely not great.

Very few characters move forward on it.

Filler episodes are a necessary evil on network TV. But if you need to stall a story, at least let the characters have fun together in one place.

Eddie and Katherine are the only two characters to take that advice, and they’re ironically the only ones who make any progress.

A Million Little Thoughts:

  • Danny and Sophie’s different reactions to the photoshoot are a really natural way to keep telling the grief story.
  • The trick of having the arcade employee find Danny’s wallet with Jon’s I.D. in it is so unnecessary.
  • Part of the reason I want Maggie and Gary to split up quickly is because I’m excited to get to know who Maggie is without Gary and without cancer. Also, without Eric.
  • Only one adult works at a time on this show. It’s weird.
