Younger Review: Forever (Season 6 Episode 12)
Younger Season 6 Episode 12, “Forever,” is a game-changer that comes on slow but leaves us burning for more in the end. Kelsey’s journey takes us for another loop on her career rollercoaster before ultimately coming in for a smooth landing. Meanwhile, Diana gets married, Lauren and Maggie are up to their usual shenanigans, and Liza remains torn between two happily ever afters.

At the end of the previous episode, we saw Kelsey writing her letter of resignation to Charles and she follows through on that leap on this finale.
Kelsey: I’m taking a leap and the net will appear.
Liza: Well sometimes the sidewalk appears first!
If I’m being honest, I almost have whiplash from this story–it has changed so many times over the course of the season and now we are essentially where we started with the positions reversed. Kelsey strikes out on her own, crafting her own game plan for what to do next and how to build herself back up, but by the end of the episode, she comes right back home.
Charles asking Kelsey to come back because she’s a part of his family is one of the most touching moments of the episode, but I was kind of looking forward to Kelsey’s solo venture. I am always happy to have the gang all together, and I do think that Younger functions best with everyone working together.
However, Kelsey’s pitch for her new company instantly has me hooked. If we aren’t going to see her out on her own, I want to see her create her own company with this vision I would love to see her take Millennial and Empirical there with her new position on the board.
Charles: You’re family Kelsey. I knew that the day you sacrificed everything you wanted to save us. If that isn’t family I don’t know what is.
Over the last six years, this team has become a family. Watching them become more than co-workers to each other has been a delight and it is beautiful to see their relationships become so much deeper. Kelsey is like a daughter to Charles, and very clearly a sister to Liza.
We feel the heartbreak that each member of this family feels at Kelsey’s decision to leave and the absolute elation at her return. I’ve enjoyed Kelsey’s growth over the season and watching her tackle big obstacles on both a personal and professional level. When Season 7 returns, I would love to see her continue that growth from a stable position, without quite so many seat changes.
It seems like Kelsey’s venture with Quinn will now be null and void, but I would love to see Younger continue to explore this relationship and Kelsey’s vision moving forward.

In the midst of Kelsey’s brief departure, Diana’s wedding day has arrived. In true Diana fashion it’s a beautiful event that truly celebrates how far she’s come, the love she’s found, and the family she’s become a part of over the last several years.
Diana: You’re a thousand years old this can’t be your first rodeo.
I’ve said it before, but I just really adore how Diana and Liza’s relationship has evolved since she learned the truth. I honestly think this might be the relationship that Younger has done best this season, and I say that considering this one of the best seasons of Younger yet across the board.
They’re on a more even playing field, and while Diana was understandably hurt when she first learned the truth, they’re now in a place where they can make jokes about it while genuinely loving each other all the same. I hope these age jokes never stop.
It feeds my soul to see Diana and Liza be able to make fun of each other in one breath and be completely vulnerable with each other the next. I can’t wait for more of these two together next season.
Diana: You know Liza, as a maid of honor you’re a slowburn. But in the end? You’re white hot.
Liza’s love life also comes to an interesting crossroads on this Younger season finale. The way that we leave her in the final moments of this episode leave the writers with several satisfying narratives they could choose to explore next year.
Charles’ proposal is something that I always thought would happen for him and Liza, even if I am slightly surprised that it’s come up so soon! It’s clear that this takes Liza by surprise as much as it does the audience, if not more. I believe that Liza really could be happy settling down with Charles and sharing their blended family, but I think in order to do that right she needs to spend some time with herself first.
The scene between Liza and Josh is a much more satisfying ending for their story if Younger chooses to end that relationship than the one they shared on the previous episode. Watching these two acknowledge what they had together as something that is special and just theirs through the metaphor of her tattoo leaves this relationship in a place where the audience would be okay to see it end or to see it explored as a possible endgame relationship.

In the end, Liza’s answer to Charles’ proposal is left up in the air as they are swept away in the crowd by the joy of their celebrating and unbeknownst family and friends. I think before Liza can answer him without any apprehension, she needs to take some time for herself.
I definitely want to see Liza settle down and live happily ever after in one of these relationships by the end of the series, but I want to see her explore who she is without either of these men first. Right now, I see Charles and Liza as a beautiful endgame for Younger, but I think it would really expand Liza’s character and the show itself to spend a season with her figuring things out on her own.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
- I want to see Kelsey and Zane stay together for a whole season! Their will-they/won’t-they has been fun, but the bits and pieces we’ve gotten of them together are fantastic. I am ready to see this power couple rise.
- I am so happy for Diana, she and Enzo are truly perfect together. She looks so happy I could cry.
- Could Lauren and Maggie get back together? They’re such a great comedic duo and I think they could work really well together now that Lauren has really discovered and grounded herself. And Younger could definitely use more of both of them, having them together again could be a really fun story for Season 7.
- I really thought Lauren was going to pee on that ice sculpture and what happens just gets progressively more chaotic. Thoughts and prayers for her wounded vagina.
- Charles inviting Caitlin, as well as Liza, on their family vacation really warms my heart. We’ve seen Liza with his girls, but we haven’t seen him with Caitlin. I’d love to see these two together next year. Does Caitlin even know they are together?
- Who do you want to see Liza with? Should she say yes to Charles? Should she explore the unfinished business she has with Josh? Should she step back from both of them? Let me know what you think in the comments!
