The Outpost Review: There Will Be A Reckoning (Season 2 Episode 9)

Reviews, The Outpost

OH, MY WORD! These are the three words that come to mind while watching The Outpost Season 2 Episode 9 “There Will Be A Reckoning.” Just simply, OH, MY WORD!

So far this season we have had several moments that have left us in shock, awe, or even dumbstruck. Garret’s death, Gwynn nearly marrying Tobin, The Mistress becoming the royal advisor and so many more.

Each of these scenes and countless others were exciting, to say the least. They built drama and intensity throughout several episodes, and they continue to do so now with each new episode.

That is the difference between all those episodes and this one. On Season 2 Episode 9, we get instant karma.

Nearly every move made by the characters affects them within the same scene. This includes Talon and Zed being attacked after their canoodling.

By the way, I still don’t trust that son of a gun, but before I get sidetracked by that whole storyline, let me stick to the point.

The episode starts with Gwynn arguing with Tobin’s cousin over the land he was promised. Lord Milus tries to bully Gwynn into handing over what he believes is his and feels as though he has her backed into a corner. He has no clue that Tobin is standing in the shadows waiting to see everything that conspires.

I never thought I’d be so happy to see Tobin come to Gwynn’s rescue. I love how he doesn’t resist putting Lord Milus in his place — even though it could cost him dearly. I’m starting to respect Tobin and find myself cringing less and less as he snuggles up to Gwynn.

The tables are turned on Lord Milus, and he is sent on his way. We know we haven’t seen the last of him yet. Not in a long shot.

This scene cuts to the oh-so-troublesome Garret. Man does he stir up some chaos!

The evil guard — who’s hopefully the only Garret sympathizer in town — takes over watching the prisoner and hilarity ensues. This may be the first time this season where I feel that Janzo is his old self. I understand that characters develop and whatnot, but something just seems a bit off about him.

As Janzo jumps on the evil guard’s back and proceeds to scream like a little girl, I can’t help but laugh out loud. This has to be one of my favorite scenes of the episode. It is also enduring when Munt shows up to save his little brother.

On a side note, in Season 1 Munt was just a throwaway character that was only a small step above an extra. It is great to see him make some impact on the show, especially with this scene.

I’m relieved to see that Garret does have some sense left in his head by trying to stop the guard from actually killing Janzo. It gives me a small token of hope that the real Garret can come back eventually. Which I’m sure he will, it is just a matter of time.

Later on, when Gwynn comes to speak to the still imprisoned Garret, I get some dialogue between the two that I’ve been waiting so long to hear.

Yes, they said it! They really do love each other!

Oh, wait…is that a one-handed hug Garret has around Gwynn’s throat? Umm, maybe I should look away now. Should I change the channel?

Damn, I should have known.

Okay, it is pretty obvious the whole time. I know the bastard hasn’t changed in a short amount of time and for no particular reason.

At least this goes with my point of instant karma, and to think, I relive the whole thing just for you my loyal readers. I’m too good to you guys.

I can’t help but feel a little disappointed in Gwynn. Would I have made the same mistake she does? Sure, without a doubt, but I guess I hold Gwynn to a higher standard than I do myself.

Up to this point, Gwynn has made some fantastic decisions that I could never hope to make in similar circumstances, so I expect more from her than this. I guess love truly is blind.

Luckily, Gwynn isn’t the only one who pays the price for this transaction. Garret gets an unscheduled nap as well.

Gwynn: Fix him, or kill him!

Of course, Garret’s conniving doesn’t stop when he wakes up. He is just on a different kind of mission. Janzo uses his deductive reasoning to figure out what Garret is after.

Honestly, I’m surprised that this scene works.

In most other shows, I would tear this scene apart, calling it too coincidental or something of the like. Knowing the way Janzo’s brain works makes this scene feel plausible. This is the great thing about character building, you can make a scene work by using the right character for the right scene.

If Talon or Gwynn were the ones to discover this drug, I think I would view this turn of events quite differently. It is good to see the writers know their stuff.

Still, this doesn’t deter the ever-persistent Captain Garret Spears. His treachery knows no bounds this time around.

Garret knows his former men too well and uses it against the tremendously lazy guard that has been sleeping a majority of the episode. Seriously, how did they advertise this role when casting it? Sleeping guard?

This time karma works in Garret’s favor when the guard is knocked out cold — with a little help of course. If the bum just continued to take his catnaps, everything would have gone on the same as usual. Instead, the guard gets all hotheaded and ends up in hot water.

I failed to mention all of these scenes give us a reason to think before we act. Going into a situation blind is never a good idea. If the circumstances can be changed ahead of time, do so.

A bit of knowledge can go a long way in most cases — be sure to seek it out before it seeks you out instead. Just like my father taught me, what goes around comes around.
