Killjoys Review: Three Killjoys and a Lady (Season 5 Episode 3)

Killjoys, Reviews

On Killjoys Season 5 Episode 3, “Three Killjoys and a Lady,” Dutch, Johnny, and D’av start off being captured by The Lady, escape, and then end up right back in her clutches, but it’s part of the plan.

Anyone else surprised that our Killjoys are already having face time with The Lady? It’s excitingly unexpected.

If this was any other season, the team wouldn’t be that close to the season’s big bad three episodes in. In fact, they might not even know who the big bad was this early on; there would be warrants to handle and other un-related issues to tackle.

This is no ordinary season, and The Lady isn’t your typical big bad.

Dutch, Johnny, and D’av have been fighting The Lady for a while now, but they haven’t really gotten in some quality face time. They’ve interacted in the green, but The Lady wasn’t really her true self there…I guess this isn’t her true form now, but at least she isn’t pretending to be someone from their past.

During “Three Killjoys and a Lady,” we see their dynamic when they are face to face (except D’av gets Khlyen time instead of torture time).

Johnny: Are you back for more because I only gave you three stars on the last torture. You could’ve had 3.8 if you quit all the small talk.
D’av: Johnny, it’s me.
Johnny: D’av? Oh god. Thank gods its you. I was lying that was like 5 star torture.

It’s amazing that there are repercussions from The Lady’s memory/life takeover. Everyone was living a life that was, at the time, very real to them, even though it was all fake and concocted by The Lady.

If everyone moved on and acted like it was nothing, it wouldn’t feel genuine. Everyone’s gotta have some aspect of that life that has stuck with them, and for Johnny, that was being happily married and in love with Dutch.

Right now, it’s too soon to say if this is really about Johnny having feelings for Dutch, or if Johnny really enjoyed being married and in love. His last love, Pawter, ended tragically (which is putting it lightly).

Johnny probably pictured what forever would look like with Pawter, and it would be waking up together and knowing that they will always have each other.

For Johnny, Dutch is a partner, a friend, and someone who has been there for him for years. They are comfortable around each other, and they look to each other for support or guidance or for a shoulder to cry on.

Maybe Johnny is starting to look at Dutch in a more romantic way, or maybe he misses what it felt like to be married. Whichever it may be, it’s still great that Johnny can’t completely bounce back from what The Lady’s life for him was like.

The Lady: But you, you were pacified so easily, like it’s what you always wanted. Wouldn’t you like to go back to that life, to her?

The “who is The Lady” traitor game is boring, and it never really works.

When Dutch sees the mark on D’av, there is an “oh shit” moment, but then it passes and becomes pretty clear that there’s nothing amiss with D’av. He’s still D’av.

As the “no, you’re The Lady” game continues, it becomes obvious that none of them are The Lady. There’s not any real suspense after the initial mark sighting on D’av.

It also drags on far too long, and it’s not til Dutch shares her Lucy theory that things start to get interesting. With Lucy being the potential threat, there’s a bit more intrigue, more humor with all the bad acting (although, D’av in the airlock was pretty funny), and the stakes are raised.

Lucy being acknowledged as a member of the team is amazing because she is a very key member. The Lady knew what she was doing when she infected Lucy.

Gods, Lucy and Johnny saying goodbye to each other is heartbreaking. There’s a very painful callback to Lucy and Johnny’s first meeting, and it’s a fitting way for the two of them to say goodbye.

While there’s obviously concern for everyone’s safety since this is the final season, in my mind, Lucy never was in any danger. She’s a valuable character, but it’s not like you have to worry about her getting shot or anything.

Lucy being hacked and infected with a virus is not something that was on the radar, making her death heartwrenching and unexpected.

Lucy was far more than a ship. She was Johnny’s right hand, and she was a valued member of Team Awesome Force. Lucy’s been there through it all, and while it’s hard to picture Dutch, Johnny, and D’av operating without her, at least she got a fantastic send off.

Lucy: Goodbye, thief.
Johnny: Goodbye, ship.

Lucy deserves nothing less than that.

Maybe there’s a chance Johnny can bring a version of her back. The ship needs an AI system, and Johnny’s techy enough to pull something like that off. Don’t you think? (Everyone else cried their way through Johnny and Lucy’s goodbye, right?)

Stray Thoughts:
  • Hey, now we know why The Lady wants Jaq! That’s exciting progress.
  • There’s almost a student/teacher relationship between Khlyen and The Lady, and it’s weirding me out.
  • There’s almost a Jaqobis moment where D’av checks in on Johnny, and I’m very upset that we’re robbed of it.
