Beverly Hills, 90210 Re-Watch: Things To Do On A Rainy Day (Season 2 Episode 26)
The last episode of Season 2 for this rewatch is Beverly Hills, 90210 Season 2 Episode 26 “Things To Do On A Rainy Day.”
The choice has nothing to do with Color Me Badd (I was too young) and everything to do with the issues that come up in the storylines.
It’s a filler episode — but with substance.

The show isn’t even really trying to teach the surface lesson you may think they are at first with Donna catching her mom having an affair.
Yes, Felice eventually says out loud to Donna that the affair has nothing to do with her. But Felice is the one with a lesson to learn.

In the second scene when she gets to confront her mom — at the Walsh house after being scolded for being too loud Donna says,
“…God forbid someone might think that I’m angry? You care more about appearances mom, than how anyone feels. Well, I’m angry and I’m gonna hide it for appearance’s sake.”
Felice really can’t argue with that. Whenever a child calls out their parent’s behavior it’s thin ice, but Donna is also totally right that Felice is the biggest hypocrite.

She doesn’t want Donna to go to the Color Me Badd concert because the area is “seedy.” Well, I can think of a lot of words other than seedy to describe cheating on your spouse.
So, good for Donna. Calling out her mom is a moment of empowerment that we see less and less of from her as the series goes on. It’s quite a shame.
I think we can all take a lesson from Donna’s quote about appearances in 2019 if we just consider social media.

It’s all about appearances, and becoming too obsessed with that could potentially disconnect you from people around you. So, 2019 thank you for the reminder, Donna Martin.
But back to 1992 when this episode originally aired.
If you’ve been following this series, you know that I have the utmost appreciation for Cindy Walsh, her kitchen, and the safety both provide all members of the gang whenever they need it. This episode is no exception.

Jim even joins in to tell Brenda and Brandon that Donna needs them right now. Walsh advice is funny to watch because it’s at once comforting and not really advice at all — at least on this episode.
Cindy tells Donna she’ll “figure it out” and that’s all they get to before Felice rings the doorbell. It’s almost like Cindy can’t overstep by giving too much good advice that other kids’ dysfunctional parents might not think to give.
There needs to be a sane pair of adults. But Cindy never contemplates telling Donna, Kelly, Andrea, Dylan, David or Steve they deserve better.

Which brings us to the Color Me Badd concert Kelly almost gets Donna front row seats to. She, in fact, does get them but Brenda decides for Donna that she can’t handle it after the news of her mom.
This is baffling. Donna’s a teenager and they’re talking about front-row seats and backstage passes to her favorite band. At the very least it’s a few hours of distraction that Donna deserves.
Donna definitely has a mind of her own and because this is a TV show, the right to decide what she wants to do.
Speaking of distractions, Andrea is a big one for Steve, Brandon, and Dylan on this episode.

Weirder things have happened in the world, but the boys hiring Brandy to strip is just dumb. Andrea’s presence preventing the stripping is very funny. But at the same time, the point the show is trying to make is murky at best.
When Andrea finally does leave and there are a few minutes that Brandy could hypothetically do what she came there to do — Brandon puts a stop to it and Dylan and Steve agree.
Brandy feels too much like a friend or sister now that Andrea’s spent hours asking her personal questions.

On one hand, I get it. No one should have to watch a sibling strip and I wish shows today would draw this big of a line in the sand about what “sisterhood” is defined as sometimes.
On the other hand, stripping is a job and Brandy shouldn’t be ashamed of doing what she has to do for her family. If she and her husband are fine with it, that’s great.
At least Brandon pays Brandy, but what’s the point of the story? “Strippers are people too and when you realize that you won’t want to see them strip?” Hmmm??
It’s just a plot that doesn’t age well into 2019. It happens.

Thankfully David is with the girls staying out of whatever is going on at the Walsh house for most of the episode. It’s why even though he’s such a dork early on I love him.
He and Donna remain pretty steady as a couple for a good amount of time — at least the rest of high school if I remember correctly.
There might have been drama here and there, but I wish shows today would realize that constantly getting couples together just to break them up is exhausting.

It’s boring drama at best.
So, on second thought, Brenda is forgiven. She and Kelly do give Donna a pretty perfect ending to the night.
David, a mint chocolate chip sundae and a private serenade from my favorite band sound great to me.
