One Day at a Time Saved by Pop TV! Season 4 to Air in 2020

News, One Day at a Time

One Day at a Time fans, rejoice! The fan-favorite series which was canceled by Netflix earlier this year has been rescued. If a show ever deserved such a save, I think it’s this one. I don’t think I’m alone in that opinion, either.

The sitcom is getting a fourth season, which will air in 2020 on Pop TV. The first three seasons of the series will remain on Netflix, but moving forward the show will be branded as a Pop original.

Pop will also air the first three seasons of the series. One Day at a Time Season 4 will be broadcast on the CBS Television Network following its run on Pop TV. CBS was the home of the original series that aired over 40 years ago.

“When we looked at the success we’ve had with Schitt’s Creek, we felt that was because of how it championed love and kindness, and how it has a lot of emotion mixed with a lot of heart and comedy,” Brad Schwartz, president of Pop TV, told Vulture.

“And when you look at One Day At A Time, you see it does the same [thing]. They deal with inclusion and love and acceptance and family. They pull on your emotions and they make you laugh. There are such parallels to what helped Schitt’s Creek break through on Pop,” Schwartz continued.

“Three months ago, I was heartbroken with the news of our beloved One Day At A Time’s cancellation,” said Norman Lear in a statement. “Thank you to my producing partner, Brent Miller, our incredibly talented co-showrunners, Mike Royce and Gloria Calderón Kellett, and of course, Sony, for never once giving up on the show, our actors or the possibility that a cable network could finally save a cancelled series that originated on a streaming service. And one last thank you to Pop for having the guts to be that first cable network. Even this I get to experience — at 96.”

“We are thrilled beyond belief to be making more One Day At A Time,” said executive producers and co-showrunners Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce. “This show has meant so much to so many, and we can’t wait to dive in with our amazing new partners Pop and CBS. And we’d especially like to thank all of the fans for their undying support, helping us turn#SaveODAAT into #MoreODAAT.”

“We are so honored to be associated with this exceptional series,” said Jeff Frost, Sony Pictures Television President. “It means so much to so many people.  We were never willing to accept that the story of the Alvarez family might not continue and we undertook every effort to ensure that did not occur.  We are so grateful to our new partners at Pop and CBS for believing in this series and working with us to bring it back.  We are overjoyed to continue to work with the brilliant team of Gloria, Mike, Norman and Brent as well as this brilliantly talented cast.”

“WE’RE BACK! Thanks to every fan who made #saveodaat trend worldwide, ONE DAY AT A TIME is heading to POP TV & we couldn’t be more excited!” Gloria Calderón Kellett tweeted earlier today. “We have many more stories to tell about & we can’t wait to share them with you! Thank you @sptv & @PopTV! #moreodaat”

Fans truly did make it their mission to save the series as soon as news broke that Netflix has canceled it. It also swept our Tell-Tale TV Awards in every category it was nominated in this year, with wins for the series itself along with wins for Isabella Gomez and Todd Grinnell.

One Day At A Time stars Justina Machado, Rita Moreno, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, and Stephen Tobolowsky.

  • I am/was so relieved and happy when I heard the great news and I am very excited to see the new season. It is a brilliant masterpiece of a sitcom that was too important to get canceled. So I am truly happy that it got saved.
