Eric Dane Previews ‘Euphoria’ and Reflects on ‘The Last Ship’ During the ATX Television Festival [Video]
Known for his roles as Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Tom Chandler on The Last Ship, Eric Dane is returning to the screen in a role that’s unlike anything we’ve seen him in before.
He plays Cal Jacobs on the upcoming HBO series, Euphoria, which is centered on a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love, and friendship.
Last weekend at the ATX Television Festival, we caught up with Eric Dane on the opening night red carpet just ahead of the screening for Euphoria.

Dane began by sharing with us why he’s excited about the new series.
“The storytelling’s fantastic. TV is a writer’s medium. It all starts and ends with the writer. But there’s an added element where you’re going to get a very cinematic experience as well, and you combine the two and you have the highest level of execution in that medium,” Dane said.
“Sam [Levinson] is a great writer, and we’re finding out now that he’s also an equally great director. The cast is brilliant, and I always like being around people who are a lot better than me, so it’s a great place for me to be. I’m pretty sure everybody, no matter what, they’re gonna love it.”
As far as his character is concerned, he couldn’t give away too much, but trust us, this is a very different role than what you’re used to seeing him play. “More will be revealed,” he teased.

Dane also reflected a bit on his work on The Last Ship, which recently ended its five-season run.
“My father was in the navy. My uncle was in the Navy. They both fought in the Vietnam war, and I felt like it was a nice sort of homage for me to pay to my father,” Dane revealed. “It was a fascinating world to play in, and Chandler’s a very noble character.”
Euphoria premieres Sunday, June 16th at 10/9c on HBO.*Additional reporting by Caralynn Lippo.
