Burden of Truth Review: The Rabbit Hole (Season 2 Episode 2)

Burden of Truth, Reviews

Joanna gets proactive about her safety while Billy entertains his brother’s idea to save Millwood on a solid Burden of Truth Season 2 Episode 2, “The Rabbit Hole,” as the former begins her descent down into her case’s “rabbit hole.”

In the face of a not so veiled threat that was communicating through her car’s system, Joanna decides to take her safety more seriously, despite her nonchalance about what she’s been through and what Noah’s told her about privacy.

I like that the second hour essentially doubles down on the premise from the premiere, feeding into the darker, more conspiracy-filled aspects of the case of the season and the threats to privacy that sounds potentially feasible in some not so distant future.

That sense of eeriness and heightened danger that Joanna is in is demonstrated perfectly through those surveillance shots throughout the hour.

On a character level, seeing Joanna calmly work through everything, reaching out, and getting things done for Noah does emphasize the kind of person Joanna is.

Of course, with her keeping things to herself and not trusting others entirely with this new problem that is Lovand’s intimidation tactics also emphasizes how far she has to go when it comes to the opening up.

But the season is still young, and I have high hopes that we’ll see Joanna learn a bit more about herself.

Meanwhile, Billy considers Shane’s proposal to try and save Millwood. From the moment Shane proposes the microbrewery, there’s a shadiness about him that doesn’t settle throughout the hour.

There are blanks in Shane’s story that I hope will be filled in throughout the season to explain those small moments in “The Rabbit Hole,” where Billy seemingly has to talk him down from a meltdown of sorts.

The charged silences when Shane mentions their father indicates there’s a story to be told.

Is what’s going on with Shane connected to their father? Or is it something else? What happened to their father?

Elsewhere, we get to see more of Molly, Luna, and Taylor which is fun and helps build on their dynamic from last season, now that they’re out on their own and dealing with their own set of obstacles.

There’s something brewing between Molly and Luna, as Luna finally verbalizes it, asking Taylor if maybe the couple has grown apart in the year since they’ve gone and done their own thing.

While Luna has become more proactive, finishing out her first year of school, and joining the Bear Clan, Molly has become more aloof, opting to hang out with friends and play video games.

Have they grown apart or will they make it through?

Taylor’s tough position between her parents continues to take a toll, leading to a heartbreaking moment as she decides to read her father’s letter. Has she forgiven him or will she take it in stride and continue to move forward?

Random Thoughts

  • That may be the grimmest opening shot of an episode I’ve seen in a while.
  • Even with the pair working apart and on different things, Joanna still reaches out to Billy for help on the case in a way. Granted, it’s not fully trusting him with her safety concerns completely, but it’s the closest we’ll get with Joanna (for now).
