Lucifer Review: Lost Souls (Season 4 Episodes 6-8)

Lucifer, Reviews

On Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 1-3, the characters deal with the fallout of Lucifer Season 3, while Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 4-5 introduce the character of Eve and Deckerstar’s “newish” dynamic.

On Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 6-8, we see the characters really struggle with their identity, their decisions, and their past.

The cases and the character arcs get a bit darker and we get a few surprises along the way. These are some of the episodes in the season where you can see how the move to Netflix truly benefited Lucifer as a show.

Lucifer Season 4 Episode 6:

Lucifer hits us with a time-jump at the beginning of the episode. It’s been months since everything has gone down. Maze is back from her trip. Lucifer and Eve are going steady.

As I mention in my review of Lucifer Season 4 Episodes 1-3, this season deals with Lucifer’s identity. This episode, in particular, focuses on it a lot. Is he the hedonistic devil from the Garden or is he a consultant for the LAPD?

LUCIFER

He spends a great deal of time trying to live both lives and failing at both of them. It gets to a point where he sends apology gifts to his ladies but is so distracted the gifts get confused. Chloe gets a sex doll while Eve gets a printer.

Linda Martin: Lucifer, if you don’t stop pulling yourself in opposite directions, you’re going to come undone.

Eve wants him to embrace his devil side while Chloe thinks he’s a good man. We see him admit to Chloe that he likes working with her. Yet when he actively tries it, someone gets hurt. And Lucifer blames himself — Dan’s comments certainly don’t help.

Tom Ellis does a masterful job during the episode with the way he portrays the nuances of everything Lucifer is feeling.

Lucifer’s current crisis presents an interesting dichotomy with Amenadiel’s plotline. While Lucifer is struggling, it seems that Amenadiel is actually reaching a certainty about his decisions.

We also get to meet another Celestial sister, Remiel.

Remiel is a lot like Amenadiel used to be. We find out it’s because Amenadiel is her favorite and taught her everything she knows. I like the fact that Lucifer has now introduced us to Lucifer and Amenadiel’s favorite siblings.

It tells us a lot about the characters themselves, and in Remiel’s case, who they used to be. Honestly, Remiel is great and I really hope we get to see more of her moving forward.

The way she interacts with Amenadiel shows us how much he’s grown and changed over the course of the seasons.

Amenadiel used to think of the humans as worthless and now he’s seen that they are as beautiful as they are flawed, and that’s okay.

Lucifer Season 4 Episode 7:

One of the highlights of Lucifer as a show is how human the characters are. It sounds ironic on a show that involves Celestial beings and demons but it’s not. All the characters are just very human.

If there’s one thing all humans feel at least one point in their lives, it’s feeling lost. This is where we pick up with a lot of the characters on Lucifer Season 4 Episode 7, “Devil is as Devil Does.” This is represented the most through Ella, Lucifer, and Dan’s arcs.

Lucifer is still struggling with being the devil. It’s made clear this episode he thinks he needs to act like the devil otherwise people will get hurt. Even though if he does act like the devil, people get hurt either way. It’s a no-win situation for him.

For all intents and purposes, Eve is the devil on his shoulder while Chloe is the angel.

They both think they know the true Lucifer, but how can they when he doesn’t know himself? Ellis portrays his dilemma masterfully throughout the episode but it’s especially poignant in the last scene.

We find out in a conversation with Chloe that he hasn’t looked for his wings because he’s afraid they are gone. Then in a stunning moment, Linda comes into the penthouse to see a broken Lucifer.

You just see the fear in Ellis’ eyes when he says he doesn’t want to be a monster.

Lucifer: I don’t want to be a monster.

His stunning white wings have turned into bat wings and Lucifer doesn’t know what that means.

On the other side of the coin, we get Ella and Dan’s arcs. Both of their arcs involve repercussions from Charlotte’s death. In Ella’s case, it manifests in a loss of faith and how that informs her actions.

Aimee Garcia is wonderful at showing us how lost Ella feels as she tries to fill the void that her faith left.

Dan’s case is even sadder. We’ve seen Dan battle darker impulses since Season 1, and he finally gives in this season. He’s using Lucifer as a scapegoat and as we see on Episode 6 and 7 he is projecting. The things he tells Lucifer on Episode 6 is the way he feels about himself.

It informs his actions on Episode 7. It heartbreaking because he gets to the right conclusion but goes about it in the wrong way.

Chloe Decker: You have had a target on his back ever since… Charlotte.

He goes a step too far as he tells the killer about Lucifer. Kevin Alejandro’s expression when he realizes his actions and his vendetta puts those he loves in danger is heartbreaking and poignant.

He needs to stop blaming others and look within himself otherwise he’ll continue down a destructive path.

Lucifer Season 4 Episode 8:

This episode is one of the heaviest of the season. It features stand-out performances from DB Woodside and Tom Ellis. This is the episode where we start to reach the climax of the season. Both Lucifer and Amenadiel are faced with choices that force them to look inward.

But before we get to that let’s touch on the lighter side of it all. We finally get to see Maze get a romantic arc with a woman. And they seem to go towards the slow-burn route, so we are blessed.

Maze and Eve meet on Episode 6, and the way they relate to each other is a nice juxtaposition to Lucifer and Eve’s relationship. Maze and Eve see each other for who they are and they think that’s badass.

Meanwhile, Lucifer and Eve keep trying to pretend to be people they are not to please the other person. Honestly, this episode is one that cements Eve as one of my favorites. She is trying so hard to please him while he is just trying to break up with her.

Lesley-Ann Brandt and Inbar Lavi have very easy chemistry. It’s a storyline I am truly enjoying especially because it’s got all the tropes. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

Lucifer has a breakthrough in this episode and breaks our heart along the way. Both Eve and Chloe want him to be who they think he is. He realizes he’s not either of those men, not really. It all culminates in Linda’s office.

Lucifer Morningstar: There is something rotten inside of me. I find it near impossible to drown out the constant cacophony of voices whispering in my ear, telling me I am evil, I’m drowning doctor! And I can’t stop asking myself… Why do I hate myself so much?

This is the point the story has been going towards since we met Lucifer back in season one. Like Linda says, this is real progress. But it’s so painful to see Lucifer come to the realization that he’s been lying to himself.

He’s been lying to himself because the lie about his father is better than the truth. He hates himself. The anguish on Ellis’ face when he cries to Linda is just gutting.

It’s a hard road ahead but at least he’s taken the first step.

Amenadiel’s plot is extremely important and I’m glad it features in a show as watched as this one. What starts out as Amenadiel’s worries about being a father end up in a look at the challenges black people face and a look into police brutality.

I feel it’s not my place as it’s not something I go through but I’d be remiss if I didn’t write about it. So I hope I can do it justice.

Despite everything in his life we’d never seen Amenadiel deal with racism until now. He knows humanity is flawed but he hasn’t endured such a confrontation with the ugliest side of humanity.

Caleb: The only truth that matters is theirs.

Denny Love and DB Woodside give us phenomenal performances. Amenadiel is a very strong character but we can see this shakes him to his core. The thought of his son growing up like this bothers him more than he can say. It’s a storyline that hits a bit close to home for a lot of people.

Amenadiel: And what changes will come as a result of your complaint?
Dan Espinoza: Probably nothing.

After all, this is the world we live in.

Additional thoughts:
  • *Maze trying to find her place in Linda’s family is absolutely incredible. I love her arc this season.
  • Linda Martin: You’re Auntie Maze, and you will always be a member of this family.
  • I love that we finally see Trixie in Lucifer’s penthouse. The conversation between her and Eve is hilarious. Also deeply love the fact that Eve protects her the moment Trixie is in danger.
  • The show closes the door on Laze in a very good way and I respect them for that.
  • The Amenadiel of season 1 would have never admitted he was wrong and it makes me happy to see how much he’s grown. The Remiel and Amenadiel fight is badass by the way.
  • Ella’s mug of herself is hilarious.

Maii is a 28-year-old writer who can be slightly invested in characters and their stories. She tries to give credit where credit is due but isn’t afraid to be honest in her writing. It's probably best not to ask about Lucifer or A Song of Ice and Fire, because you'll never hear the end of it. She graduated in film and has a certificate/minor in Art History. She brings that into her writing because, well, she’s a nerd. The only thing that beats her love of writing is her love of Pandas.
