The Bold Type Review: Plus It Up (Season 3 Episode 2)

Reviews, The Bold Type

Kat throws a queer prom on The Bold Type Season 3 Episode 2, “Plus It Up.” Even though the promo pictures are gorgeous, my feelings about the storylines surrounding the actual event are neutral.

Perhaps it’s just because the fundraiser doesn’t succeed and The Wild Susan is still closing — that’s sad. Or, it might be because the politician guy (his name isn’t really worth remembering…but for the record it’s Counselman Reynolds) is a disappointing person like most of them are.

I’m not a Rupaul’s Drag Race watcher (yet) so my reaction to the Sasha Velour cameo couldn’t contain the right amount of excitement.

I’m the Jane of this prom — supportive of Kat but that’s it.

The main theme of this episode is boundaries within relationships, though. So, there is something to explore for sure.

Jane’s dilemma stands out the most because her decision about letting Ryan in on her fertility drug routine is completely understandable. Their relationship is so new.

Plus, if one of my editors dictated that the angle of my fertility story had to involve my very new boyfriend I’d feel very uncomfortable about it, to say the least. It doesn’t even matter what Patrick’s gender is in this case.

I write pieces with a personal element to them here and elsewhere all of the time. But what I divulge is completely my choice.

There is another side of this to consider, too. Ryan could just mind his business or be on Jane’s side. Patrick isn’t his boss. He pushes because in their relationship he wants more. But this assignment crosses a line for Jane and that should’ve been OK.

Writing a personal essay with my hypothetical boyfriend is my idea of a really romantic evening as long as we have wine. But 1. It definitely depends on the topic and 2. It doesn’t have to be Jane’s.

She is not-so-subtly forced into writing her piece from this angle. Ryan does play a part in that, but Patrick creates the problem.

Would a woman like Jacqueline handle the situation better? Who knows — but hopefully Patrick’s behavior won’t continue to be so problematic if he stays.

Maybe then it will be easier to accept him. Oliver is the fashion editor and it just occurred while typing that it’s a little bit hypocritical to love him and have a problem with Patrick.

Then again, one person runs a section and the other essentially runs an entire second issue of the magazine.

But let’s talk about Oliver because his storyline is so exciting! We’re going to learn so much about his personal life if he becomes a legal guardian to Carly. It’s too early to know where that is going to go.

The Bold Type is great at telling important stories and infusing them with heart and humor. We’ve just never seen Oliver at home before (that I remember) and it probably won’t happen often. So, there are a lot of question marks here regarding execution.

I’ve never seen an episode of this show that I don’t like, but it’s surprising that Jane’s storyline is the only one with enough meat to really dig into.

The Fine Print

  • I wonder if ‘Ucking’ works well as an everyday vocabulary word.
  • Sutton and Richard’s laundry issue is cute. “Move in” boundary issues are real but…she really just needs to use the housekeeper. As long as she’s respectful…I don’t see a problem with it.
  • Kat’s dress for the queer prom is Every. Thing.
