Chicago Med Review: Tell Me The Truth (Season 4 Episode 18)

Chicago Med, Reviews

Family secrets and a whole lot of action (with very little explanation) dominate on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 18, “Tell Me the Truth.”

In an hour that has people looking for the truth, the patient of the week, a young woman attempts to hide what brings her to Gaffney’s ED from her parents. Her story not only ties in with Chicago Med’s theme of the week, but also touches on essential questions about a woman’s right to choose and what a minor’s options are under such circumstances.

Ethan’s stance when it comes to the young woman’s wish to keep her abortion and health issues from her parents, though it may be understandable from one perspective, increasingly becomes grating as the episode progresses.

His need for honesty seems to conflict with his belief that their patients have choices and Natalie calls him out on it and gives a simple answer as to why honesty isn’t always the answer.

Natalie: Some people don’t want honesty.

One aspect of the story that surprises is the moment it’s revealed that the patient’s mother is hiding a secret of her own from her husband.

With the trajectory Natalie and Ethan’s conversation goes with the parents, there’s an expectation (and dread) that it will be discovered that they are the kind of people who believe their daughter’s choice is tantamount to murder.

Though it starts to veer in that direction, it honestly takes an unexpected turn and unveils what’s probably a deep family secret.

Is it to deflect from the mother’s views? Possibly. Will I take it as a twist that ultimately changes the central focus of their arc? Yeah.

Back to Ethan’s search for honesty, though, which lands him on April’s doorstep finding out that the subtle changes aren’t because of a new man in her life, but Emma’s return with her son.

It’s a cute, heartwarming moment as April takes on the mediator role again between the Choi siblings, with a step forward.

Elsewhere, there’s just something about Connor’s story throughout the hour that feels random and fizzles out in the strangest way, with the purpose behind his mad dash through Chicago.

Though it’s entertaining to see him kind of on a mission through the city to get whatever these ultimately nonexistent kidnappers want in time, it ends on a hollow note with so many questions about who set Connor up and what kind of person would do such a thing.

I mean, sure there is some bad blood between Connor and Ava if their moment before scrubbing into the OR is any indication, but she wouldn’t do something as gross like that, right?

Alternatively, could it be that we’re just scratching the surface on something coming Connor’s way? Or is it (disappointingly) just a scam?

Only time will tell on this one.

Random Thoughts

  • I am honestly enjoying Will and Ingrid’s dynamic developing, especially seeing her confide in him about what happened at the crime scene that lands her partner in the hospital.
  • Seeing Will and Natalie apart and with other people is working out really well.

  • Why are the women on Chicago Med portrayed as such imbeciles? Natalie is unbelievably clueless for someone who made it through med school. April is incredibly self centered. Maggie is okay with forging her best friend’s signature and breaking the law. Dr. Goodwin is the only female who seems to NOT be a sociopath or psychopath. WHO WRITES THIS CRAP?
