Brooklyn Nine-Nine Review: The Bimbo (Season 6 Episode 13)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 Episode 13, “The Bimbo,” makes us fall even deeper in love with Captain Holt and Kevin (ship name Hevin?) while also making us a bit bored with the tired workplace-one-upping story we get from the rest of the 99.
The intro sequence is fantastic. It lets the actors showcase their physical comedy, while gently poking fun at Jake’s serious FOMO (fear of missing out). The episode takes a rather yawn-inducing turn from there and doesn’t truly pique my interest again until the very end when Kevin makes his beautiful kerfuffle speech.
I may never forgive Brooklyn Nine-Nine for failing to give us a Harry Potter riff-off between Jake and Captain Holt and some nerdy college kids.
THE OPPORTUNITY WAS RIGHT THERE!

Both Holt and Jake are absolutely brilliant people and us viewers never doubt that. So, the joking and teasing about their “bimbo” natures, just being a hot piece of ass, is pretty charming.
CAPTAIN HOLT: In Kevin’s world, I’m a Jake.
And it is really fun to see Captain Holt so flummoxed. Andre Braugher is truly a master class actor. His facial expressions always add an extra ripple of laughter to my reactions.
Jake and Captain Holt team up to solve the crime on the A plot, but the standout relationship featured on the episode is between Captain Holt and his soft and wet brainiac husband, Kevin.

From the handshake P.D.A. to the symphony tickets tell, this couple is incredibly intimate. Also, they are strange, so wonderfully strange.
When we get to hear Kevin stand up for his husband, not only because of how smart he is but also because of how he has chosen a life of service, I get more than a little choked up.
The public display of compliment is out of character for the reserved Kevin, but from being able to be privy to all the small moments between the couple, we viewers know it comes from the deepest and most sincere place.
KEVIN: You make me want to have a wetter brain.
Kevin’s kerfuffle is downright moving.

The B plot on the episode, on the other hand, makes us want to move on to another episode.
Any time Amy and Rosa pair up I get excited. They are one of my favorite duos on the show.
But, on “The Bimbo,” we get mere glimpses of the two of them and the focus is on Terry and Amy, who are both very antagonistic.
The thing that takes me out of the story and makes me confused is how in the world the two of them can afford the lavish lunch activities.

Limo rides? Sushi!? Personalized paintball court?!! That’s not in the price range for cops.
And, why would these two characters care so much about winning that they would be willing to spend their hard-earned money on that instead of investing in their families? It makes no sense.
Amy and Terry aren’t just competitive for competitive’s sake. We saw Amy VERY competitive with her brother earlier in the season.
That, however, makes perfect sense as was shown on the episode, because she craves a place on the piano (i.e. her parents’ approval).

On this episode, there isn’t really anything to be gained from winning.
This paints Amy and Terry as maniacal and kind of dumb people. That’s not what we know to be true of them. Sure, they get hyperfocused and competitive, but there is always a deeper purpose at hand.
As I’ve been saying for several weeks, Terry should get an episode entirely focused on him. This episode is a missed opportunity to do that.
It could have been that Terry wanted to improve his leadership by boosting morale, and that took him on a journey of excess that Amy, Rosa, and Charles helped him to quell.

I do hope that by the end of the season, we get to see the spotlight on Terry, the most underdeveloped character on the series.
