Supernatural Review: Ouroboros (Season 14 Episode 14)
After roughly a month-long wait, Supernatural finally returns for its 301st episode that brings the whole gang back for an adventure.
On Supernatural Season 14 Episode 14, “Ouroboros,” Sam, Dean, Jack, Castiel, and Rowena try to hunt an unusual monster that they’ve been tracking for some time, which turns out to be a demi-god with a modicum of foresight.
Tracking that demi-god, though, turns quickly into another battle with Michael. More on that later.

Perhaps it’s due to multiple hiatuses in relatively short sequence, but a hunt with the full group (Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Jack) is exactly what the show needed right now and it delivers. Adding Rowena to the lineup is just a bonus!
The team dynamic just makes Supernatural feel more full. Sam and Dean have always been a good source of the drama/comedy/action, but adding Jack as a sympathetic son figure and Castiel’s newfound urgency to live his life creates a richer story to draw from, and gives some additional power to the emotional beats.
Don’t even get me started on Rowena, who was once a scary villain in her own right and is now deeply concerned about both Jack and Dean. One of the best parts of “Ouroboros” is the growth that Rowena exhibits. Ruth Connell slips into the concerned mother persona so seamlessly that you nearly forget she’s a powerful witch.

Even when giving herself up to Michael (kind of…) you get the strong sense that Rowena truly cares for these guys, which makes the subsequent possession even more powerful.
Even thought it’s happy to have the whole gang working on a case, things are still quite a bit dark and scary around Supernatural. Though they catch the scary demi-god, Michael uses that chaos to escape Dean’s mind and get out into the world.
But it doesn’t go how you think it does.

Instead, Michael devastates the bunker by killing Maggie and all of the red-shirts from Earth-2. Which causes Jack to rip Michael out of his new vessel (Rowena) and destroy him.
A couple of things to glean from this. One, it’s easy to see why the angels feared Jack upon his birth. Because…WOW.
Secondly, it makes you wonder if Jack might be the antagonist in the second half. He’s missing a chunk of his soul and is now extremely powerful again. He could easily obliterate Sam, Dean, Castiel, or anyone else in a Thanos-like snap.

A few stray thoughts:
- I don’t care about any of the unnamed Earth-2 people, but they really did Maggie dirty. I’m upset.
- Follow up thought: is Jack powerful enough to resurrect/save Maggie now?
- Did the opening sequence remind anyone else of iZombie? No? Just me?
- Jack could easily turn out to be the big bad of Season 14.5, but I wonder if instead his bond with the boys will grow stronger, which will hurt Adam Milligan all that more when he and Earth-1 Michael re-enter the fray.
