Schitt’s Creek Review: Roadkill (Season 5 Episode 10)

Reviews, Schitt's Creek

Schitt’s Creek Season 5 Episode 10, “Roadkill,” is about as close as it gets to a perfect episode of television. The only glaring issue is the absence of the beloved Patrick, and this is easily forgiven because Stevie fills the void by David’s side, reminding us that their dynamic is what made us fall in love with this show in the first place.

Every performer turns in Emmy-worthy performances on this episode. Annie Murphy slays as Alexis, capturing the childlike nature of this adult woman, who is genuinely offended by her brother’s unwillingness to trust her — even as she proves time and again that she is one thousand percent untrustworthy.

The Tamagotchi fight is comedy gold. This cold open incorporates everything that makes Schitt’s Creek so charming. The sibling rivalry between David and Alexis has always been one of the most endearing parts of the show. It’s been beautiful to see them grow and get closer, but it’s still wonderful to watch them bicker like little kids.

Additionally, every time one of the Roses references something from their former lives, it somehow manages to top the absurdity of the last time. Alexis saying that caring for the Tamagotchis was a “full-time job” is not only hilarious but exactly the kind of thing that makes Alexis so deliciously Alexis.

We get all of this genuinely funny dialogue within the first two minutes of the episode. And it doesn’t stop there. This episode is laugh-out-loud funny for 21 minutes straight.

Catherine O’Hara has the opportunity to deliver one of the funniest lines of Schitt’s Creek to date (“You’ve just provided a nice Passover Seder for a family of hawks”). Her ability to say these absolutely ridiculous things with her Moira-specific affect and no hint of sarcasm is simply remarkable.

Speaking of incredible lines delivered impeccably: a quick shout-out to Alexis indignantly telling David that she’s had sex on plenty of sinks and this is the first time one has broken.

Meanwhile, David and Stevie have the opportunity to spend the day together manning the Rose Apothecary table at the town hall. The established love that exists between these two humans is the perfect foundation for the disdain with which they often address each other.

We know they love each other, which is why it is so enjoyable to watch how they relish pushing each other’s buttons. Ultimately, Stevie wants to see David succeed. But if she can witness him squirm as he tries to navigate a bump in the road like his former boss trying to con his customers out of buying his products, that’s clearly a bonus.

This episode is a brief departure from the Cabaret rehearsals, which means we can likely expect to dive back in headfirst for the last few episodes of the season. We’ve heard a lot about Stevie’s discomfort at being thrust into the spotlight, but eventually the show will go on and I’m hoping that means we’re going to see her shine.

Or… it could be a perfectly Schitt’s Creek thing to do to make the whole thing totally cringe-worthy. What are you anticipating? I can’t wait to find out!
