Siren Review: Oil & Water (Season 2 Episode 4)

Reviews, Siren

Maddie’s mother makes a poor decision, Ben teaches Levi the ways of being a male human, and Helen forms a bond with her long lost family on Siren Season 2 Episode 4, “Oil & Water.”

I feel bad for Maddie because although she didn’t give her mother full trust and gladly accept her back in her life, she still hoped that things were going to work out. There wasn’t much, but any hope that Maddie did have is now flushed down the toilet.

I don’t think that Susan will leave again, though. I think that she’ll try to fix her wrongs and continue to push herself on Maddie and her father. I hope that Maddie tells her father about her relapsing because he deserves to know what’s happening under his roof.

It’s a good thing that Maddie has her own family now without her and can quickly get away when she wants because she doesn’t need that type of energy in her life right now. I hope that she doesn’t go back to that house for a few days and gives her the silent treatment because I know Susan is going to try and say it was a one-time thing.

Helen’s relative, Rick, is so skittish around her, but he comes running right back when the cream she gives him works on his patchy skin. I like that she has someone now that she can relate to, but I think that she should have waited on telling him about mermaids.

I understand where Helen is coming from because it’s obvious that Rick has part mermaid in him as well, but that news could’ve waited. Maybe Rick will be fascinated and will want to learn more, or he’ll freak out that he’s met a real-life mermaid and try to pull a Calvin and contact authorities.

Helen has put up with a lot of drama, so I don’t understand why she’d rush into telling him and potentially having more.

Ben teaching Levi everything about being a human is downright hilarious and sweet. It’s not the same as Ryn because when she was learning, she was more timid and cautious because she had no idea what was going on. But, Levi doesn’t have that problem because he already has a safety net on the ground and knows that he’s okay with Ben.

I do see a potential problem with Levi thinking that he doesn’t have to listen to women because Ryn is the leader and if he defies her it’s not going to be a good situation. I know that Ryn likes Levi, but I don’t think she’ll put up with him going against her.

I don’t like that Levi dragged himself to the bar, though, because now Nicole can see that there are multiple people who act completely different in town and Xander’s already given hints towards him knowing about the mermaids.

As for Xander, man, I used to think he was okay, but he is entirely losing his mind. What in the world is he thinking kidnapping Katrina and offering to get rid of the rig mapping the ocean floor all so he can kill Levi?

I get it, your father died, and you want justice, but Ben has explained multiple times that Levi only did what he was told because he was a soldier. He didn’t do it for personal benefit, it was orders, and there’s nothing that can change that.

Killing Levi won’t bring back Xander’s father, and I don’t think that vengeance is going to be a good feeling for Xander, I think that he’ll probably end up killing Levi and then realizing what a mistake he made because he will have lost all of his friends besides Calvin. There’s also the possibility of one of the other mermaids killing Xander in retaliation.

The storylines this season are phenomenal! I’m so happy that we’re getting more backstory on Helen’s family and the mermaid genes. But, I don’t like this little threesome thing going on between Ben, Maddie, and Ryn. I hope that it doesn’t develop any further than the make-out session at the end of the episode because that was… a lot.

  • I don’t care for the 3-ways sex, it’s gonna get old with those who aren’t solely watching for sex. And it’s also going to get old if Ben’s father is never told. How come EVERY good show is going to just 10-13 episodes and then getting killed because the next season is too far away to continue. And Ben going back to insanity, i hope you know where youre going with that.

  • Get off the sex, and they need to dwell more on military plot, the mixed-race plot, and bring Ben& Maddy back into the sea aquariums studies they supposedly are into regarding these beings. Too many bar scenes. And i think you need to start showing alot of in water at shore scenes. Why are thes things either deep water, or walking on land, do they never hold a group gathering in water at the pier the way dolphins or manatee do. You cannot help but wonder what kind of behavior they have at the dock while in water. BUT you never see that. Not talking about the CGI, talking about at the dock psychology, behavior, language, reactions. None of the human contact with them has been explored where they are in water, and humans on dock or ship (other than attacks as if totally wild), then how did they cooperate to end the drilling. In a way too many things open, not enough new ideas explored, and stuck in a rut of more 3-way sex (WHO CARES!). I think plots govern more than Wonder Woman or Charlies Angels jogging their boobs with one-line dialog every 5 minutes apart. I really like ENEMY WITHIN better, and they seem to be on hold too.
