Schitt’s Creek Review: Hospies (Season 5 Episode 8)

Reviews, Schitt's Creek

On a show with such a rich comedic ensemble, each week provides a new opportunity for someone to shine. On Schitts Creek Season 5 Episode 6, “Rock On,” it was Jennifer Robertson. On Schitt’s Creek Season 5 Episode 8 “Hospies,” it’s Annie Murphy.

When Jocelyn and Moira find themselves without a Sally Bowles for their production of Cabaret, Alexis behaves as though she is doing them a favor by offering to step in.

It’s hard to know when Moira speaks if what she’s saying is based on reality or just the reality inside her head. Moira has certainly underestimated Alexis before, so when her insistence that Alexis should not audition for the musical is in direct opposition to the way Alexis presents her talent, it’s unclear if Alexis is going to be really great or really terrible.

Of course, in this case, Moira’s assessment is dead-on. Alexis has no business performing in a musical, but thank goodness she auditions, because otherwise the world would have been deprived the opportunity to hear “A Little Bit Alexis,” the brilliant song co-written by Annie Murphy herself and currently available to stream.

With lines like “I’m a little bit single, even when I’m not,” and “Hide your diamonds, hide your exes, I’m a little bit Alexis” this lyrical masterpiece embodies everything that makes Alexis so specifically….Alexis.

The song drips of the old, pre-Schitt’s Creek Alexis, so it would’ve been interesting to see Ted’s reaction to it. It’s a nice reminder that no matter how much these Roses grow, they are still these ridiculous, over-the-top, rich people with absolutely no self-awareness about how ridiculous and over-the-top they are.

This point is driven home again later in the episode when Moira shows up to see Stevie at her apartment. There’s a really beautiful moment when Moira tells Stevie that Emir ditching her is his loss, not hers. Briefly, it seems like maybe Moira stopped by selflessly to offer Stevie comfort.

But, no. There’s always something in it for Moira.

However, her offer to Stevie to is kind and genuine it’s still delivered with the caveat that they couldn’t find anyone else and Moira is desperate. Then she reaches peak Moira when she takes back the bottle of wine she’d brought.

But, Stevie as Sally Bowles and Patrick as the Emcee opens up the opportunity for Stevie and Patrick to spend lots of time together in very little clothing so David’s reaction to that is something to very much be looking forward to.

Quick shout outs to:

  • Cute little Patrick putting his foot down
  • The RoseBud winning a Hospie award!
  • David’s “Nonchalance” sweatshirt
  • Alexis’s dance moves. Where is the ‘A Little Bit Alexis’ music video??
