The Gifted Review: eneMy of My eneMy (Season 2 Episode 10)

Reviews, The Gifted

The Gifted is back on our screens and what a telling episode it is. While it’s definitely not the strongest episode it’s still entertaining, The Gifted Season 2 episode 10, “eneMy of My eneMy,” focuses on getting John back.

The way Andy and Lorna react to being back working side to side with the underground tells us their states of mind.

One thing that strikes me while watching this episode is how similar Jace Turner and Andy Strucker’s mindset is. Sure they are on opposite ends of war but they have basically the same mentality. They want the other side completely wiped out, and they don’t care who gets hurt in the process.

The Gifted Season 2 Episode 10 - Percy Hynes White as Andy Strucker

Both Jace and Andy blame the other side of the war for their side’s casualties. Jace’s daughter’s death was an accident but it was caused by his own actions throughout the first season, and the first episodes of season 2, that cost him his wife.

In Andy’s case, Rebecca was a little psychopath who gleefully murdered humans. And like we saw in The Gifted Season 2 Episode 9, “gaMe changer,” he was the one that actually killed Rebecca.

They are both so buried in their grief and their anger that they don’t see what they are doing. Jace truly believes he is the good guy in all of this, and every villain is the hero of his own story.

Major props to Coby Bell because that is some phenomenal acting throughout this episode. You can truly feel his frustration and anguish build up throughout the episode until it is finally unleashed.

The relationship between the original three is so important to me so I truly enjoy this episode. First, we get that lovely flashback of them just doing normal things and hanging out, which highlights how important Lorna and Marcos are to each other, and how important John is to them.

Then we have them coming together to help the man in question.

I love when Lorna and John’s friendship gets brought back up. Lorna didn’t just leave Marcos and the Underground, she left her best friend behind. It’s wonderful to see how much Lorna still loves her old family. Something that will definitely come into play later.

John: The day will come when our lives are on the line, and on that day we can’t afford secrets. We need to be able to depend on each other 100%.
Lorna: a thousand percent.
Marcos: Always.

Lorna doesn’t need much convincing to work with the Underground to save John. And unlike Andy who is basically completely brainwashed, Lorna still feels strong ties to the Underground; not that she’d ever admit it.

The Gifted Season 2 Episode 10 - Sean Teale as Marcos Diaz / Eclipse

Lorna and Marcos still work flawlessly together. Just like I mentioned back in The Gifted Season 2, episode 8, “the dreaM” it is so clear they’re still deeply in love. It is part of what makes this dynamic so interesting. Neither is denying they still love each other but at the moment they fundamentally disagree.

John: Even if I wanted to I don’t think I’m strong enough to keep the two of you apart.

John’s line in the flashback about not being strong enough to keep them apart is interesting. Is it foreshadowing for Reeva and the Inner Circle not being able to keep Lorna and Marcos apart? After all the kiss Lorna gives him is a big clue that she is not completely sure about where she stands.Additional:

  • What did they whisper to each other when John was buying beers, it was something dirty wasn’t it?
  • Why does racist purifier dude doubt the idea of mutants fighting each other, doesn’t he remember the time of the X-Men vs the Brotherhood?
  • Marcos and Clarice’s growing friendship gives me life. I love him comforting her and telling her that it wasn’t her fault. They don’t have the kind of bond that the original three have or that John and Lorna had, it’s more of a sibling like push and pull.
  • Strucker family reunion did make me a bit happy but only for Reed and Caitlin’s sake.
  • I love Clarice telling off Lorna, because no her principles are not more important than John’s life.
  • Marcos complimenting Lorna’s helmet is one of my favorite scenes in the episode.

Maii is a 28-year-old writer who can be slightly invested in characters and their stories. She tries to give credit where credit is due but isn’t afraid to be honest in her writing. It's probably best not to ask about Lucifer or A Song of Ice and Fire, because you'll never hear the end of it. She graduated in film and has a certificate/minor in Art History. She brings that into her writing because, well, she’s a nerd. The only thing that beats her love of writing is her love of Pandas.
