Welcome to the New Year: Our TV Resolutions for 2019
2018 is winding down, and while everyone is enjoying the tail-end of their breaks and binging everything they’ve missed over the last 12 months, the Tell-Tale TV staff have come together to think about how we want to spend the next year watching television.
From dropping that TV show you no longer enjoy, to committing to picking up a few more comedies/dramas/etc., check out Tell-Tale TV’s staff TV resolutions!
Charles:
With the cancellation of shows like Daredevil and Iron Fist, I think it is about time I binge watch the entire Marvel Netflix universe.
They have always been on the backburner for me, just waiting for the right time when I have absolutely nothing better to do. So instead of laughing at one-liners from Balkai Bartokomus while half asleep, I’ll drift off with visions of crime fighting in my head.

Mary:
In 2019 I vow to finally start watching The 100. I have many friends who rave about it. It’s my kind of show, so I’m not sure why I haven’t started it yet.
Erin:
My 2019 TV resolution is to binge-watch Game of Thrones before the final season airs in April.
Lacy:
This is gonna be the year I finally watch The Great British Baking Show.

Nick:
My 2019 TV resolution is to let myself quit watching things. I’m a serial completist, but that just leads to things piling up unwatched and feeling like I can’t start something new. So in 2019 if I’m ambivalent about a show, I’m challenging myself to quit it.
Maii:
This is the year I stop hate watching things that only make me angry. If I’m not enjoying a show I’m going to drop it.
I promise to finally watch the shows on my Netflix list rather than re-watching the same two shows. Also, I’m going to finally do my re-watch of Game of Thrones from the start before the finale.
Cristina:
So many TV resolutions, so little time! I’m an overachiever when I make normal resolutions and when I make TV resolutions. I can’t help it!
In 2019, I’d like to actually watch Game of Thrones. I’ve seen one episode ever (last season’s finale), and apparently, that is sacrilegious (both the fact that I’m woefully not in the know and that I dared watch a finale as my first episode).
I’d like to let myself off the hook and quit resolving to watch Breaking Bad. I tried watching it once, and I didn’t like it. I can still be a connoisseur of television and not like Breaking Bad. I’d like to finally watch The Americans and to try giving Doctor Who another chance after I broke up with it during the Peter Capaldi years. Come at me, Thirteenth Doctor!

Esme:
I’d like to finish watching The Americans. I’ve started, but it’s a show you really have to pay attention to and I just let too much time go between watching it, so I’ve started over a few times. The same thing with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, actually.
Alicia:
Normally I would never be able to follow through with New Year’s resolutions, but when it comes to TV, I am always up for starting new shows.
That’s why my TV resolutions for 2019 consist of choosing to pass on binge-watching The Office for the twentieth time and see what other streaming services have to offer outside the world of Netflix.
I’m hoping to check out the original content, and tv shows Prime Video has to offer like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jack Ryan, and Mr. Robot, which all look incredible and completely different from what I normally watch.
So here’s to a new year of branching out and embracing the different!

Lauren:
So my resolution continues to be to watch more science fiction. I did get myself back into the genre in 2018, but there is still a lot that I didn’t get to.
This year I want to watch Black Mirror and Wynonna Earp. I also want to make sure I make A Discovery of Witches “appointment television” for myself because Chilling Adventures of Sabrina reminded me of how much I love witches and magic.

Sarah:
My TV resolutions are to catch up on all the streaming shows I SO behind on while not falling behind on the new ones coming out this year and most importantly, to finally watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
I adore Stephanie Beatriz and love what I know about Rosa’s coming out story, so I don’t know why I haven’t watched it already. It’s been on my to watch list forever; I just haven’t gotten to it yet.
That changes in 2019, hopefully before the end of the upcoming season.

Samantha:
In 2019 I’m going to finally watch Outlander and finish watching The Americans.
2019 is also going to be the year I stop letting outside opinions affect the enjoyment I get from watching any show. If a show makes me happy and entertains me, then who cares what anyone else thinks?
This year we are letting go of bad tv and fandom energy and spreading joy and kindness instead.

Ashley:
Like others already mentioned, one of my resolutions is to be willing to break-up with shows I’m not enjoying anymore. I always try to stick with a show until it ends, but with so much good TV, I need to be okay with giving up shows I don’t love — even the ones that are objectively excellent, but I just don’t happen to enjoy watching.
And secondly, a resolution I listed last year was the livetweet shows more often. I didn’t do a great job of that this year, but it is something I’d like to be able to do more of if I can make it happen!
Hillary:
I want to encourage more people to watch shows they might not normally think they would like or would watch.
I’ve seen a number of friends fall in love with shows like Wynonna Earp and Legends of Tomorrow, even when they swore they don’t like fantasy or superhero shows. Same goes for people who think as a single young person a family comedy like One Day at a Time wouldn’t be for them or think a think a show about comedians like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wouldn’t be interesting enough for them.
People forget that the point of watching television isn’t just for what’s comfortable. These writers, directors, and actors–they are all storytellers. These stories are what inspire, motivate, impact, and change you as a viewer.
It is about the meaning of the story, whether representation, love, compassion, or family, and then letting the viewer define that meaning for themselves. Stories bring us together through all of those things and given all the bag going on in the world we could definitely use more of that.

Brianna:
Like someone mentioned before, 2019 will be the year I also catch up on a few streaming shows. Admittedly, I tried to do that this year and was able to hop on for part of BoJack Horseman, Haunting of Hill House, and Big Mouth.
But, there’s still a few I’d like to try and check out like Marvel’s Runaways and Elite. There’s also the matter of catching up on Netflix’s latest acquisition, Lucifer, before the series debuts at its new home.
Mostly, I’m resolving to make 2019 a more enjoyable viewing experience. That means less worrying about what I’m not watching and more just enjoying what I am watching.
