Chicago Med Review: Death Do Us Part (Season 4 Episode 9)

Chicago Med, Reviews

It’s the big day for Will and Natalie on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 9, “Death Do Us Part,” but it ends all but happily for the pair in a strong hour that leaves a few of our favorites doctors and nurses facing tough situations.

Given everything that has been built up over the last eight episodes with Will’s arc, it really was only a matter of time before things got bad. But to see it get to the point where Will has to go into protective custody is an unexpected outcome.

I mean, I understand the near-death moment as Will faces one of Ray’s sons and makes its own mark on the story, no doubt leaving Will with plenty of trauma to deal with after seeing a man shot right in front of him.

But to see it escalate to the point where he has to go into hiding on his wedding day takes it to another level that surprisingly doesn’t feel ridiculous.

It’s still frustrating that Natalie doesn’t have all of the details as she finds out that her wedding day is ruined by the news that her fiancé has to go into hiding and not meet her at the end of the aisle, though.

I get why Will insisted that Natalie not find out about Ray and his involvement with the Feds’ investigation, but isn’t at least some disclosure merited when it comes to the woman you will be spending the rest of your life with?

Smoothly transitioning and different interconnecting stories throughout the hour is not easy. But, “Death Do Us Part,” does it very nicely as it ties in Will’s close call with Ray’s son and Connor’s patient of the week so well that even the tension and repercussions work heartbreakingly well.

While Will is dealing with his life being threatened, Connor has to grapple with the impossible choice of risking his patient’s life to help Jay and the investigation to find Will or save his patient’s life.

The end result is a worst-case scenario for Connor as he finds that in his mission to help Jay find Will, his patient dies.

These doctors are not strangers to losing patients. But this one hits Connor hard in a way that looks like there will be some lingering effects, making Will’s story ripple beyond just him and Natalie.

Will this situation change the dynamic and what does this mean about potential litigation?

One of the patient stories that leave an unexpected sentimental impact is the husband and wife that come into the ED after she stabs him, assuming he’s an intruder. It quickly takes a devastating turn when it’s revealed the reason behind her delusions.

Amber Young: I don’t want to co-exist. I want to love him.

Even after she opts for the surgery to help her, despite her husband’s protests, the results are heartbreaking as she completely forgets who he is.

The moment he is wheeled into her recovery room is painful to watch and his last words to Dr. Charles about when they first met at a U2 concert only add to the emotional aftermath.

Random Thoughts:

  • Ethan and April’s post-breakup dynamic makes sense, and even with the opening she’s given when he asks her if he wants her to stay with the baby, she still doesn’t take it. It makes me wonder what’s in store for them and if Vicki is here to stay.
  • What are the odds that Natalie and Will’s journey back to each other and potentially the alter (again) will be a long one? Thoughts on what we’re seeing with Ethan and April?
