Supernatural Review: Unhuman Nature (Season 14 Episode 7)
Is Michael completely gone from Dean? Is Lucifer really dead? These are two questions that Supernatural fans have been asking themselves for the entirety of Season 14.
On Supernatural Season 14 Episode 7, “Unhuman Nature,” we may have finally gotten some answers to those questions.
“Unhuman Nature” finally welcomes back Mark Pellegrino’s Nick, the former vessel of Lucifer. Nick is struggling to find peace in the aftermath of losing his family and Lucifer’s death.

So he goes on a killing spree. Seems like that might not help.
The murderous Nick is compelling, and gives Pellegrino some excellent scenery to chew. But the story serves two other major purposes.
One, Nick and Dean are showing similar symptoms of men who might have some lingering archangel inside them. It is assumed that Michael left Dean, but perhaps that’s not (entirely) the case after all.

Two, Nick’s emptiness causes him to reach out to (wait for it) Lucifer who (wait for it) might NOT be as dead as previously assumed.
In the Supernatural universe, Mark Pellegrino is pretty well only known as Lucifer. Though others have played Lucifer, only Pellegrino has really left his mark on the role.
That fact alone makes Pellegrino’s turn as the desperate, aching Nick even more compelling, as the two characters are so different.

Dean and Nick’s PTSD issues are only part of the angel-induced issues faced by Team Free Will 2.0 on “Unhuman Nature.” The other, of course, being Jack is falling further ill.
The hunt to resolve Jack’s issues is decidedly less compelling than the issues that plague both Nick and Dean, but by episode’s end the stories have intertwined. The boys enlist Rowena and a shaman to try and help Jack, but not even archangel grace does the trick.
Though not explicitly stated, it’s becoming clear that Jack and Lucifer’s fates are tied.

Even though Nick’s story was slightly more compelling, what shouldn’t be understated is how excellent Alexander Calvert has been this season. Jack’s earnest attempt at escaping his famous father’s shadow is a really refreshing attitude that you don’t always ese on TV.
Calvert’s performance is genuine and compelling, making Jack impossible not to care about.
A few stray thoughts:
- It’s always good to see Rowena. I’m glad it’s impossible to kill her.
- I was so wrapped up in the story about Nick’s family and the whodunnit of that story that it threw me when I realized it didn’t matter and it was just a catalyst to bring back Lucifer. Maybe finding that demon will snap him out of it?
- Sergei seems like he’ll be a fun recurring frenemy, doesn’t he?
- Easily my favorite moment was Castiel’s casual reference to Gabriel’s time in Monte Carlo with porn stars.
- I still think this story is ripe to bring back Adam/Earth-1 Michael.
- I’m getting excited that we may finally see the Lucifer/Michael showdown that Sam and Dean prevented in Season 5.
