The Gifted Review: outMatched (Season 2 Episode 4)
How far is too far? That is exactly the question that is asked on The Gifted Season 2 Episode 4 “outMatched.”
The episode asks us how far are we willing to go to get what we want. It is another spectacular episode with wonderful acting across the board.
We find out why it is that Caitlin is so protective of Andy; she’s been fighting for him since before he was born after all. Amy Acker is one of my favorite actresses and this episode is just one of the reasons why.

We see Caitlin go through pretty much every emotion. She is one of the main components of the episode’s question, how far is too far before the line is crossed?
Caitlin: I have already decided, I am not giving up on our son. He is gonna make it and he is gonna be amazing. Just like our daughter.
We get Caitlin finally talking to Lauren and apologizing for the way she’s been acting since they lost Andy. Lauren is sure that she’s the one that needs to bring Andy home but that might not be the case as we find out later.
The Underground goes to find Wire and they find his brother Graph instead. To say things go awry is an understatement.

This is the point that Caitlin is asked how many lines is she willing to cross.
Caitlin gives Graph an injection that counteracts the drug which makes him go into immediate withdrawal. She gives him the drug, as a nurse, it should go against everything she stands for.

The Gifted Season 2 episode 3 talked about how far parents would go for their children, but again, is this too far?
Reed: How are we any different than the people we are trying to save him from?
The other side of this is, of course, Jace. It still feels weird to have a person of color be the comparison to the racists. Having the face of the purifiers be a white man? That one feels quite normal.
Honestly, I don’t see how anyone can see this storyline and not see a connection to the news in our day-to-day life, especially the talk of taking back a country and loving their species. Is this a bit too close to home, perhaps?

Clarice seems to be the only one making any sense. Jamie Chung does a spectacular job as the voice of reason. She is not afraid to call out things that are not great.
She is the one that points out that kidnapping and torture aren’t lines they want to cross. It makes them no different than the Inner Circle.
She asks the hard questions. What if Lorna and Andy are too far gone and can’t be brought back. I think Lorna will turn her back on the Inner Circle if something big happens, but Andy?

I’m not too sure. After all, we see what he does to Lauren. Maybe it will be too late for him.
Additional Insights:
- Stephen Moyer is fantastic during that last scene; I like how they’re handling Reed’s feelings about his powers.
- Marcos is focused on Dawn and is angry at Lorna, which is normal considering everything.
- Reed’s powers are going to be important in the fight against Reeva, aren’t they?
