Grey’s Anatomy Review: Gut Feeling (Season 15 Episode 3)
Alex Karev as chief of surgery? Count me in.
Alex starts his job as interim chief on Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 Episode 3, “Gut Feeling,” and naturally, it’s quite an adjustment.
The setup of this is one of many reasons to appreciate what’s happening. Grey’s Anatomy continues to feel fresh and new despite how long it’s been on the air, and one reason it’s able to accomplish that is that it changes character dynamics every so often.
And this one is genius.

JUSTIN CHAMBERS
We’ve seen several chiefs since the days of Richard Webber being in charge, but we’ve never seen one of the original five take on the position. Granted, there are only two from that group left on the show — Meredith and Alex — but to finally make that move is a really interesting choice.
Even better is that it’s not actually Meredith. Meredith has moved up the ranks too, and in big ways that include the award formerly known as a Harper Avery, and you’d almost think the story would head in the direction of her being chief of surgery. Maybe one day that will happen.
But allowing Alex to take on this position is even more interesting because he’s been more of an underdog, and he’s changed more than any other character on the show, Meredith included.
He deserves this chance to shine, and I’m so excited to see us explore his character in this way.
He’s not perfect at the job, but it’s only his first day, and he sure seems to be doing better at it than anyone might have expected him to. His willingness to stand up to Webber when he needs to is proof of that alone, as is his decision to fire Dr. Roy.

JUSTIN CHAMBERS, JAMES PICKENS JR.
Speaking of Webber — yikes. He does end up being right in his final assessment of the patient and whether or not he was an alcoholic, but the way he leads to that, and his handling of the situation suggests more is going on with him than meets the eye.
There’s a reason Bailey didn’t want Webber to take the job of interim chief, and it wasn’t just that he’d done the job before and might affect her when she came back.
Meanwhile, the “season of love” idea continues as Meredith has started working with her matchmaker patient. She’s not exactly willing to open up about everything, but the fact that she’s willing to make this move in the first place is exciting for her and I can’t wait to see where it leads.
On top of that, there’s a glimmer of tension between her and DeLuca that feels like it could mean *something.* From the sisters commenting on him on the motorcycle to the glance across the room, there’s definitely a set up. I also love how the sisters are fully embracing their discussions of sex and relationships.

CATERINA SCORSONE, CHRIS CARMACK
It really is reminiscent of the show’s early days, and I like the idea of getting back to more soapy romantic stories, at least for a bit.
That doesn’t mean all of the relationships are solid, though. Jackson has taken off, and Maggie is rightfully upset about it. It’s a bit startling that he’s just gone like that, but it works knowing the journey he started on the last episode.
Amelia and Owen seem like they’re on a great track, but they still don’t know Teddy’s secret. Maggie is trying to help without actually telling Amelia what’s going on, but it winds up being some misplaced matchmaking.
Other thoughts:
- I enjoy how forward Link is with Amelia. I said the same thing in my review of the Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 premiere, but he adds a new energy to the group that works really well. That includes how he responds to Webber, too.
- DeLuca, Link, and Webber going out after work is so fun! I hope we get to see more of their bonding.
- Jo and Meredith have a great scene where Jo bemoans how much she misses the two of them working together. I miss it too, honestly.
