Chicago Med Review: What You Don’t Know (Season 4 Episode 5)
There’s plenty of secret-keeping and people dealing in half-truths on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 5, “What You Don’t Know,” and it’s not just the doctors and staff that are dealing with it.
The patients of the week all appear to be harboring secrets from their loved ones.
Seeing the patient with Huntington’s continue to hide his diagnosis from his son, and seeing the mother and daughter dealing with the heartbreaking and heavy truth behind their shared experiences in being raped, both hit as emotionally heavy moments throughout the hour. But Bernie’s secret lands a bit more forcefully because of Emily and Ethan.

Emily’s choice to stay with Bernie is interesting in light of the things she learns about him throughout the ordeal of finding out about his wife and daughter. While seeing her confront Ethan about the way he leads her to find out the truth about Bernie also has some merit, it also feels like it lets Bernie off the hook a bit for what he did, not only to Emily but to his wife.
Bernie’s wife’s reaction and the ensuing confrontation also feel like misdirected anger. So even given everything, it feels like Bernie gets off a little too quickly.
While the patients harbor plenty of secrets, Will and Ava are dealing with their own and dealing in half-truths. This adds even more tension to the situation.

Will’s first task heightens the stress of his moments throughout Chicago Med and feels like it piles on higher stakes for when the truth inevitably comes out. Ray Burke doesn’t seem to have a clue what’s happening — which means that danger might be coming Will’s way soon, right?
Then there’s the fact that Will only tells Natalie half of the truth, which admittedly is kind of understandable considering what the agent tells him after planting the bug. But considering that marriage is about openness and honesty and communication, this does not bode well.
Meanwhile, Ava’s dealing with her own secret. It feels like she almost gives it away on her own after Connor asks her to try and persuade the donor to reveal themselves.
Connor: I’m sure whoever it is will be flattered when I come groveling for more.
Ava appears to be uncomfortable when he initially asks and then just upset when he requests that one favor. But I have questions about where this feeling of discomfort and frustration is coming from, especially after that last scene between Connor and Ava in the hybrid OR.
It’s a sweet, quiet moment. But it also has the potential to be uncomfortable in itself if there’s more to the story between her and Connor’s father than we got to see on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 1, “Be My Better Half.”
Given her expression, there’s clearly a fair amount of guilt she’s dealing with. The question then becomes: What part exactly is she feeling guilty about?

What did you think of this episode of Chicago Med? How long before Will’s and Ava’s secrets come to light, and which will have the worst fallout? Is Will headed for a life-or-death situation?
