Take Two Review: It Takes a Thief (Season 1 Episode 12)
The penultimate episode of Take Two Season 1 offers a fun art heist case of the week and a surprising ending, as Sam and Eddie find themselves with a 72-hour deadline to find a missing painting on Take Two Season 1 Episode 12, “It Takes a Thief.”
While the team rushes to recover the painting, Sam and Eddie continue to grapple with their dynamic and their feelings for each other. They each face the prospect of dating, which adds a level of tension to the team’s investigation that leaves you feeling like it’s building towards something.
What it does build up to is a pleasant and interesting surprise.

Sam and Eddie enlist Zeus’ help with their investigation and get more than they bargained for. His help comes with plenty of knowing glances and some not-so-subtle observations about Sam and Eddie’s dynamic.
But while Zeus offers his little hints, Sam’s dealing with heading back into the dating world as she gets mentions of the ultimately faceless and never revealed Troy Harper.
Seeing Eddie so bothered by not knowing much about this Troy Harper starts off fun and builds up to Eddie’s decision to opt out of his date with Melissa (the thief they partner up with for the case) really nicely.

There’s a familiarity in what Zeus does, with the nudges and hints about what Sam and Eddie are working through in terms of their dynamic. But it’s all done with a sense of humor and fun that the Take Two writers handle well.
One specific moment stands out and illustrates that point so well, when Sam goes undercover on a Matchstrike date in order to clone a key card. There’s a moment of vulnerability that comes through in her undercover story, and Eddie notices it from the surveillance cameras.
Zeus: That was real. It just wasn’t meant for him.
But what’s interesting about Sam and Eddie’s choice at the end of the episode (the decision to just go for it) is that even with everything served to us on a platter (in terms of the heavy hints, the elevator conversations, and nudges from others around them), it’s not necessarily an expected move.
Getting the will-they-won’t-they leads together relatively early on is not something that a lot of other shows are willing to do, so it’s fun to see Take Two go there.
But the question now is… where do Sam and Eddie go from here? Are they going forward or taking it back?

Elsewhere, the reveal and capture of the suspect of the week is fun. It’s revealed exactly how Sam and Eddie provided the distraction necessary to allow for Melissa (the thief they initially suspected of the crime) to break into the man’s warehouse.
There’s a sense of satisfaction when the arrest happens after the duo is outsmarted at earlier turns. Not to mention Sam’s ability to throw his words back in his face!
Stray Thoughts and Observations
- Monica offering Berto that Matchstrike bio and telling him that she really does listen to him is very sweet. I’m really enjoying this friendship and seeing it grow over the season.
