Everything We Know So Far About the Possible ‘The Office’ Revival

It looks like NBC is thinking long and hard about taking another go at the Dunder Mifflin staff. That’s what she said!

A revival of The Office is no longer an unrealistic dream for fans of the show as those hushed whispers you’ve been hearing about everyone’s favorite workplace comedy possibly coming back are very much true. Back in December 2017, Tell-Tale TV reported on the possibility of getting a revival of The Office series and we are happy to report that more information has now surfaced.

According to TVLine, NBC is currently in talks to revive The Office for the network’s 2018-2019 season. If all goes well, we could be seeing The Office back on our television screens sooner rather than later.

So what exactly can we expect from a revival of a sitcom beloved by so many viewers and Netflix bingers alike?

The revival would be set at the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch, says TVLine, and would also feature a mix of new and old cast members much like the later seasons of The Office tried to incorporate.

Despite introducing new cast members, many of the original cast members have expressed interest in being a part of the reboot in some capacity. But no one has been as outspoken about returning to their Scranton roots as John Krasinski has been.

The Quiet Place co-writer, actor, and director not only confirmed that he would be down to return to the series for a reunion as Jim Halpert, but during an interview with TheWrap at SXSW he had the perfect pitch for a reboot.

“It really comes down to the idea… the original British show, the best thing was they had a Christmas episode — it was a one-off. I would love to do that. I think it would be a sort of ‘Where Are They Now’ kind of thing. That would be really fun,” Krasinski said.

This idea comes with concern from fans that a full season order of the Greg Daniels comedy could potentially undermine the show’s legacy and make that perfect ending to the series feel redundant in a time where no television show can have proper closure. There is also the added disadvantage of trying to bring back such a large cast of rising stars for a lengthy season run.

Despite those difficulties, the response from the rest of the cast has been mostly positive when it comes to finding some way to reprise their roles from the hit sitcom.

Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly and Krasinski’s on-screen love interest on The Office for nine seasons, admitted during the Television Critics Association press tour in January that she doesn’t know much about the revival, nor has she been approached to reprise her role as Pam.

Regardless, Fischer added that she would love to be a part of the revival anyway she could.

“I loved playing the character and as long as Greg Daniels is the person in charge and the visionary behind it, then I’m absolutely [in]… we’d just have to get Mindy [Kaling] to write some episodes, B.J. Novak… that show was so great because of the talent involved in the show, behind the scenes, not just [on screen],” Fischer said.

Cast member Angela Kinsey, who played Angela, also chimed in on Twitter when rumors of The Office revival first started circulating in December saying she wanted NBC to contact her and Creed Bratton, whose character on the show shared the same name, ASAP with details.

But the biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether or not Michael Scott will make a triumphant return to Scranton.

The answer, unfortunately, is no.

As TVLine has confirmed, Steve Carell, who starred as the branch’s regional manager, Michael Scott, for seven of the comedy’s nine seasons, will have no part in the new series if NBC is to proceed with a reboot. This comes with information surfacing that the search for a new regional manager is said to be already underway for the workplace comedy.

Of course, this is hardly new information for fans of the show, as Carell was stern on staying absent from the comedy series throughout its final two seasons with only a brief appearance from the character during Dwight’s wedding at the end of the series.

Earlier this year NBC’s network president Bob Greenblatt talked to Deadline about the possibility of The Office making a comeback with comedies like Will and Grace and Roseanne resurfacing.

“We often talk about The Office,” he admitted. “I’ve talked to Greg [Daniels] four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘Maybe someday, but not now’. There is certainly an open invitation, but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I would do it.”

While NBC has yet to comment on or confirm any details of a possible revival, it would seem they are already on a roll when it comes to securing strong comedies as the network graciously saved Brooklyn Nine-Nine from cancellation at FOX and is rumored to possibly revive 30 Rock in the future as well.
