The Originals Review: God’s Gonna Trouble the Water (Season 5 Episode 7)

Reviews, The Originals

On The Originals Season 5 Episode 7, “God’s Gonna Trouble the Water,” Hayley’s funeral is overshadowed by the increasing threat to New Orleans posed by the Hollow and Greta’s army of fanatical vampires. Someone who possesses a great deal of power has their own plans for the Mikaelsons.

Marcel and Vincent’s attempt to restore Elijah’s memories hits a snag when they discover someone is using dark magic to invade Elijah’s mind. The obvious intention behind this would be to make sure Elijah doesn’t remember his love and devotion to his family (keeping him estranged and disinterested in his siblings’ and niece’s fates) and to use him for their own advantage.

Greta’s minions are at the top of the list, even though Elijah isn’t exactly down with the “Nazi Nightwalkers.” His only interest is in Antoinette. But Elijah’s fiancé remains a question mark. She’s lied to Elijah before, and when faced with the possibility of losing him to his family, she could have made a call when he was unconscious.

Elijah has a tragically sad track record on The Originals when it comes to women, and the timing of his and Antoinette’s meeting is suspicious.

Antoinette claims to despise the ideology espoused by Greta and August, yet she explains to Elijah not long after they meet the reason for not wearing a daylight ring:

Antoinette: I took the ring off again. Returned to what I had been taught by my family. Now, their rules ground me.

It’s hard to ignore the side-eye Vincent gives Antoinette as she attempts to convince him and Marcel of her innocence. It doesn’t bode well for Antoinette that her little brother Roman (who remains MIA) has access to some powerful witches.

Only a handful of people know of the plan to undo the compulsion, so the culprit is someone in the inner circle who either cast the spell themselves or gave a heads up to someone else. The timing could be coincidental and the result of Hayley’s death.

Things grow more confusing when Klaus winds up with Elijah in a chambre de chasse, depicted as the Nola compound. The preview for the upcoming episode shows that Kol and Rebekah suffer the same fate, reuniting the four Mikaelson siblings who each carry a piece of the Hollow inside them.

Theoretically, this shouldn’t expedite the prophecy surrounding the Hollow since the Mikaelsons are tied together mentally, not physically — although Klaus’ and Elijah’s bodies remain close enough for it to be bad news.

If the motive for cramming the Mikaelsons together is the hope they’ll implode — destroying any possibility that Klaus and Elijah will reconcile, causing 1,000 years of bad blood and grudges to resurface, and tearing them apart permanently — Ivy could also be the guilty party.

She knows her life is at stake as a firstborn.

This tactic is a bit too duplicitous for Vincent.

But what if the person involved has only good intentions? The Mikaelsons are formidable as a unit, and they can’t fare much worse working together than they have while they’ve been trying to keep their distance.

Beks, Kol, and Klaus can convince Elijah to open that damn red door. They’d be able to plot and plan with a little help from their friends.

The chambre de chasse promises to have a few other guests as well.

Hope’s been busy grieving, but she’s also looking up spells. After her role in sealing Hayley’s fate, would Hope make the mistake of relocating family members against their will? She is absolutely determined to access all of her power to reinstate always and forever.

The Mikaelsons have ties to a whole lot of witches, some alive (Davina, Vincent, Ivy, Freya, Hope) and many dead (Esther, Finn, the Ancestors, Dahlia), so the scenarios and possibilities are endless.

Whatever the plan, whatever the outcome, whoever the architect, it won’t be anything fans expect — which is exactly how the final season of The Originals should be.

Other thoughts:

  • Klaus’ goodbyes to Hayley and Hope are highlights of the episode. While Klaus is immensely great as a villain, this softer side added emotional intensity to the episode.
  • Have we seen the last of Declan, and if not, what role might he play in upcoming episodes?
  • The show continues to hint at an upcoming Klaus and Caroline romantic pairing.
  • Who will lead the Crescent pack now that Hayley is gone?
  • Hayley’s final farewell still fell short of what she deserves, but since she’s set to return for at least one more episode, closure for her character could still be forthcoming.
