Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Review: Rule #149 Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow (Season 5 Episode 2)
Paul Adelstein returns to Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Season 5 Episode 2, “Rule #149: Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow,” reprising his role as ex-husband Jake Novak.
Jake and Abby have had a very twisted history with their on-again, off-again divorce situation. There was a time when I really wanted them to be able to work things out. Not anymore.
Jake is a man-child who doesn’t understand what it means to be divorced. The guy has the audacity to claim he should still get a say in how She upgrades her house because he pays child support. No, that’s not how this works. Frankly, Abby should have said as much instead of giving in and letting him have a “say.”

He seems to be in a state where he isn’t quite over Abby. He can’t be happy for her that she’s moved on, to something real. Mike is an absolute contrast and delight in this episode.
He’s strong, he’s confident. He doesn’t feel the need to make a scene in public. That’s how adults behave.
By now, Jake should have grown up some but he hasn’t. His character has not developed. Yes, he wasn’t a main character and was more or less absent for major chunks of the last five seasons, but he is now acting like a glorified version of the ass we met in Season 1.
Looking back, he never really grew out being a pompous douchebag at all. It looked like he was growing up, but seeing him next to Mike Brady, you can clearly see that he was never a good fit for Abby.

Abby’s character has grown quite a bit over the years. She’s gotten better since Jake left. What was she doing this episode?
The Abby that came out to play in this episode had completely lost it. It was like something possessed her and it was not flattering at all.
She’s the face of this show. Abby’s character development is going to be what’s talked about when Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce is brought up after the series ends. If she hasn’t grown, they failed, regardless of how exceptionally some of the other ladies have grown.
Luckily there is still hope for her.
Delia wanting a baby is still kind of getting to me, but it’s hard not to like Delia as a whole. That is partially because Necar Zadegan is absolutely divine and you can’t help falling in love with her.
People change over time; their priorities shift. It’s not completely inaccurate that someone who was adamant about not having children might want them later, but, they lost that representation (women who don’t want kids) when her ovaries suddenly started exploding.
Representation matters and a headstrong woman who was happy and content without children was a breath of fresh air Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce gave the audience.
I’m not a fan of this route they’re taking with her. The flirtation with Phoebe’s brother though… girlfriend, don’t go there. That has drama written all over it, and with only four episodes until the series ends, there is no time to develop this relationship adequately.

Speaking of which, Phoebe’s history is even more messed up than we were led to believe. She’s grown a lot over the years and knowing what she went through to get to where she is, clears up a lot of what we’ve seen of her.
She had to fend for herself and she came out strong. She’s that strong woman that you want to aspire to be like. The one who has fought and fought and fought but still stands up to fight another day.
I like what they’re doing with her story-line. This brother situation could have very easily been ridiculous, but there’s depth in this story. There’s room to play. It’s dramatic but not overly so.
The sibling bond has been missing from this show ever since Max left and it’s nice to see another layer added to Phoebe’s story. She was the ditzy blonde, initially, but she has so much more to offer.

JoJo still takes the cake. I’ve said it before but she was the best addition to this show ever. She’s the most relatable character on this show and just an overall delight.
Seeing her happy and smiling because Albert was showering her makes your heart swell up. Jo is the character you want to root for. You want her happy.
She’s seen her fair share of dark times and is at a point where you want her happy.
She handled the mother in law situation with class even if she did get a bomb dropped on her.
Here’s hoping that Frumpkis’ return to her life doesn’t have her falling off this track she’s on. She’s come too far to fall off now.

Finally, the fashion on this show continues to slay. Cynthia Summers costumer designer) has always dressed the women in outfits that have been unique and true to their character’s personas.
This dress on Delia is easily one of the best costumes worn on this show. Absolutely stunning.
