Siren: Top Moments from ‘Being Human’ (Season 1 Episode 8)
The town of Bristol Cove mourns the death of Sean McClure on Siren Season 1 Episode 8, “Being Human.”
When the town of Bristol Cove comes together to mourn Sean’s death secrets from the past are revealed, and Ben’s friendship with Xander gets put to the test.
Here are my top moments from “Being Human.”

ELINE POWELL
Ryn’s Desire To Learn
Ryn’s whole life has been as a mermaid, but it’s clear that she’s much more than that. She’s part human as well and she wants to learn everything there is to be a human.
Ben gets props for apologizing to Ryn about the way he’s been acting to her, but it’s time for him to leave the headspace that Ryn is just an animal. Like Ryn says, she’s part mermaid, but she’s also part human.
It’s interesting to see how Ryn processes a new emotion such as sadness. It’s upsetting that it has to come from Ben accusing Ryn of only being an animal like the rest of the mermaids.
I feel like it is very mature, and kind at the same time, of Ryn to confront Xander and apologize for what happened to his father. She only wants him to know that she is genuinely sorry for what happened. Even though nobody but Maddie and Ben know about Ryn being a mermaid, I feel like this is her way of showing him that she is one of the good ones.
Ryn and the sea lion hugging on the dock is the cutest scene that has aired on the show, so far. When the times are tough, and Ryn is trying to prove that she is good and not evil, this is a sign that what she is doing is working. The sea lion is no longer afraid of her and even sees her as a friend.
I’m sure my neighbors can hear me cheering as Ryn takes a stand and puts Ben in his place. What he said to her truly hurt her feelings and she honestly hasn’t done anything to make him act like that towards her.

JILL TEED, RENA OWEN
Helen’s Secrecy
Helen is one of the most interesting characters on the show, to me, and I wish that we could crack open this deep, dark secret that I know she’s keeping.
I want to know what she has against the other mermaids and what forced her to come to land. There’s a distinct form of hatred and resentment towards them as she confronts Ben on how Sean died for real.
It’s interesting that Ted, Ben’s father, is giving Helen a monthly check and she’s calling him family. What would he be giving her a monthly check for? I feel like she’s being paid to keep her mouth shut about the reality of mermaids.
What I also think is that Helen did exactly what Ryn is doing. From Ryn’s attempt to communicate with humans by herself it’s evident that Helen wouldn’t have been able to make the transition to land alone.
I think that Helen had the help of humans to figure out how to live a human life, and Ted might be one of the ones who helped her. Ted is probably a far out guess, but I think that there has to be someone in town who did help her and Helen’s family comment to him could mean something of the sort.

IAN VERDUN
Xander Learning The Truth
It sucks that Xander has to find out that Ryn is a mermaid from her visiting his fathers funeral. The truth is, Ben and Maddie should’ve told Xander the truth about how much they knew when it was apparent he wasn’t going to stop until he could prove that he wasn’t crazy for what he saw.
If Ben and Maddie had brought him in and let him know what they were doing it never would have gotten to this point. Now, even though Maddie keeps talking good about Ryn, he’s going to have to be convinced that not all mermaids are evil. Hopefully, he will be easy to turn around.
Xander wanting to sleep on his boat to be close to his father is sad. I don’t think he’s going to get over this until he gets his revenge, which may come sooner rather than later with the other mermaids coming to town.
All I can think about is Xander and Maddie being an item after she mentions that there was something in the past between them. Ex-lovers by chance? Was it a relationship or a quick hookup?
Other Thoughts:
- I can’t believe that Donna is so enraged that she’s bringing back up to land so she can take her revenge.
- Decker getting Ben’s mom into the medical trial she’s been wanting is a strategic move. He’s getting his hold on Ben’s family for leverage.
- There’s a possibility that Chris senses that Ryn is more than human, which is not a good thing if he starts running his mouth.
- The group can’t blame Chris for wanting to leave town after everything he’s been through. He deserves a vacation somewhere sunny and away from mermaid drama.
